Asian American
Mentor Program (AAMP)
This student-run peer mentor
program was established in 1988 by concerned students and the Office
of Student Affairs in order to meet the specific needs of first-year
Asian American students. Incoming students are placed in groups
headed by upper-class students. These groups provide opportunities
for discussion of Asian American issues, peer advising, social and
cultural activities.
Asian Pacific
American Heritage Month Community Fair
One of the biggest events each
year is the community fair (Saturday, April 28, 2001) held at Pomona
College campus. This year's theme for the month is Smoke
and Mirrors: Shattering the Illusions of the Model Minority.
The APA Heritage Month community fair consists of vendors, food,
entertainment, and community based organizations. To prepare
for the Community Fair, committees are completely student run, giving
students an opportunity to use programming skills to coordinate
different aspects of the Community Fair. These committees
include publicity, non-food vendors, food, entertainment, logistics,
and community based organizations. All students from the Claremont
Colleges are encouraged to head a committee or work on a committee.
Weekly dinner meetings with committee heads throughout 1st and 2nd
semester are necessary to coordinate all the logistics of the Community
Fair. To be involved with the APAHMCF, please call the AARC
at x18639.
Community
Outreach
The Asian American Resource Center
reaches beyond the boundaries of the Claremont Colleges and into
the community through service projects, by providing students an
opportunity to become more involved specifically with the Asian
American youth and elderly. Several times each year, the newsletter
The Real World is issued to inform students of opportunities available
at community based organizations or for selected service projects.
Inland Valley
Asian Pacific Islander Student Leadership Conference
This year's theme is Envisions:
Stepping From Behind the Shadows. In collaboration with
Cal Poly Pomona, UC Riverside, Pasadena City College and surrounding
local high schools, the annual Inland Valley Asian Pacific Islander
Student Leadership Conference is a day-long conference including
workshops of various subjects and levels to help boost leadership
skills and awareness in API students. Last year’s IVAPISLC
was Praxis, held at Pomona College. All students are invited
to attend the conference. This year, it will be held at UC
Riverside on Saturday, March 3rd, 2001.
The Real
World
The newsletter The Real World
is mailed out to inform students of summer internships, scholar
ships, and full-time jobs with community organizations, legal and
legislative offices, health clinics, etc.
Student Internships
at the AARC
The AARC is staffed by about
14 student interns from the Claremont Colleges who work on different
program committees and work with the director and assistant director
of the AARC. Each year openings are available for students
wishing to pursue a more active role in the Asian American community
at the Claremont Colleges. Application is open to students
of all backgrounds, experience, majors, years and (contingent on
funding) any of the 5 Claremont Colleges. Leadership, office,
professional, and programming skills are enriched from working at
the AARC.
