Pomona College received an NEH Challenge Grant several years ago that includes support for a Research Assistant Program. Its purpose is to provide to faculty research assistants chosen from among our undergraduates. To quote from the proposal:
“During both the academic year and the summer months, most faculty members find the help of a research assistant essential to the timely completion of research projects…. Members of the faculty are in general agreement not only that Pomona undergraduates are exceptionally competent assistants, but also that research participation is one of the finest educational experiences available to Pomona students.”
Income from the endowment provided by NEH and matching gifts will fund six assistantships in the humanities (including History). The Research Committee invites applications from individual faculty members and a student assistant to conduct research in the humanities.
Applications should include
- Names of the faculty member and student applying;
- A two page description of the project, its potential scholarly
value, and the expected outcome of the project, composed by the
student;
- An official transcript.
- A letter of support from the faculty member specifying the
role of the assistant in the research and the experience of the
student in the discipline;
- The venue in which research results will be presented (e.g.,
Poster Conference in Fall 2006, dept. forum).
The proposals will be evaluated on (i) the quality of the proposed research; (ii) the importance to the project of research assistance; (iii) feasibility of the project within the duration of the grant; and (iv) qualification of the students for the work to be done.
