|
- When: |
Tuesday, June 23, 2009 ~ 6:30 p.m. |
|
- Where: |
The Philadelphia Senior Center
509 Broad Street in the Arts District
Lindquist Hall (Library)
Philadelphia, PA 19147 |
|
-Details |
In the last several years, there’s been a renewed interest in serial fictions:
TV shows like The Sopranos, Lost, and The Wire are told through months- and
years-long sequences of weekly episodes. These dramas have their origins in the
serialized sensation novels of the 1860s, which combined melodramatic events and
complicated plots with realistic settings, developed over a year of monthly
installments. While we won’t – alas! – be able to read a sensation novel
together, we’ll talk about the typical and typically shocking features of this
genre, look at some of the original magazine-published installments and their
illustrations, and think about how Victorian and twenty-first century readers
are (and are not) similar.
The cost to attend this event is $10, which includes light refreshments. Please
make your reservation by Tuesday,
June 16, 2009. Reservations are confirmed when payment is received. |

led by Synthia Malina who did an exchange at Pomona in the 1980s. |
|
- When: |
Saturday July 11, 2009 ~ 10 a.m. |
|
- Where: |
The New Children's Museum
200 West Island Avenue
San Diego, CA |
|
-Details |
Celebrating its first year, the New Children’s Museum of San Diego is inviting
parents, grandparents and kids of all ages to see what all the excitement is
about! Although centered on promoting the arts to children, this is no ordinary
art museum. Everyone is encouraged to move, touch, climb and interact with the
exhibits. If that inspires you, there are also studio spaces where kids can
create their own art projects and work with professional artists. This is fun
for everyone, from toddler to teen. Bring the two year old who will have fun
going through the Texture Forest, or visit the Bubble Fountain where you design
your own bubble wand shape to see if you can make bubbles that are not round!
And who could resist a room covered in mattresses with big foam tires where
pillow fights are encouraged?! Build your own tent city and explore what “home
really means, or join the teen crowd in the tech studio. Remind yourself how
much fun learning can be, and share that joy with the kids or grandkids.
Cost: If you register by Friday, July 3 you will receive a coupon good for “2
for 1” admission which applies to the prices mentioned below.
Otherwise $10 per guest ages 1-64, guests 65 and older are $5, and guests under
one are free. This event does not require advance payment, you will pay when you
arrive at the museum. However, space for the tour is limited and reservations
will be on a first-come first-served basis. The brief tour of the museum will be
given by staff member Synthia Malina, who was an exchange student at Pomona for
a year in the late 1980s.
Parking is available in the Museum’s garage for $10. There is also street
parking and other public parking facilities in the area. For more information
please visit the museum’s website at
http://www.thinkplaycreate.org/index.html and click on the “visit”
link.
Toy Rescue & Recycle
The New Children’s Museum has a plan to rescue broken or unwanted toys, and
recycle them into a hands-on, kid-created art project! Bring your old, broken,
and unwanted toys to the welcome desk and we’ll give them a new life.
Once we have collected a critical mass of toys at the Museum, they will be
cleaned, taken apart, and placed in large plastic bins for children to rummage
through in the Design Studio. Using their imagination and creativity, along with
glue guns, tape and some grown-up help, children will use old toy parts to piece
together a toy sculpture.
Please, no stuffed animals, oversized toys or wood. Plastic and other hard
materials are preferred. |
