- When: Thursday, December 3, 2009 ~ 6:30 p.m.
- Where: Loews Philadelphia Hotel
1200 Market Street
Philadelphia, PA 19107

-Details Moving beyond the romantic images of Inca ruins so popular with tourists to Peru, Pomona College students have been traveling to the high Andes during the summer to get to know the realities of life in contemporary peasant communities near Lake Titicaca. Under the auspices of The Chijnaya Foundation, a nonprofit charitable organization created by Professor Bolton with the support of other faculty and alumni, the student volunteers live in the homes of host families while working on projects in health, education, agriculture, tourism and enterprise development. This experience offers students a unique opportunity to gain an in-depth understanding of an exotic culture and to make a contribution to the well-being of campesino families. In this talk, Ralph Bolton ’61 will discuss the important role students and alumni have played in the work and success of the Chijnaya Foundation.

The cost for this event is $10 per person and includes heavy appetizers (make this dinner!). Space is limited and reservations are required. To RSVP, please register online or call 909-621-8110 by Tuesday, November 24, 2009.

Tropical Math:  How HOT Is Your Geometry?

Register Online

- What: An interactive discussion with Professor Gizem Karaali

- When: Monday, December 7, 2009 ~ 7-9 p.m.
- Where: Faculty Club
UC Berkeley
Faculty Glade, heart of campus.

Please click here for directions from your point of origin, there is no specific street address for this venue!  It is recommended that you take BART to the downtown Berkeley station and walk to the Faculty Club.  It is a short walk they say.  If you do prefer to drive, you can either park off campus or pay for a parking permit when you park in a campus lot.

-Details Picture yourself on a gorgeous white sand beach in Brazil, enjoying the beverage of your choice and relaxing over . . . math problems?! Well, maybe it isn’t your dream vacation, but Tropical Math is getting a lot of attention lately and has the potential to change the way you think about math. Named by French mathematicians in honor of a Brazilian colleague who pioneered “min-plus algebra”, the term “tropical” only refers to the French impression of Brazil. But make no mistake; Tropical Math is still pretty hot! And while your first reaction may be “this is way over my
head!”, Professor Karaali will show you how smart you really are. Using basic math you would have learned in high school and even before (refresher hints will be offered if need be) she will walk you through some examples, and you will see that just like solving puzzles, this new math will build on skills you already have and challenge your brain too. Join us for an entertaining evening of Tropical fun!

The cost to attend this event is $10, which includes dessert and coffee. Please make your reservation  by Wednesday, December 2, 2009. Space is limited and reservations are required. Reservations are confirmed when payment is received.

This venue does not have a specific street address.  For directions please click here.  As an alternative to paying for on-campus parking, please use BART and exit at the downtown Berkeley station.  It is a short walk to the Faculty Club from there.

New York, NY

‘But What If Someone
Sees Me?’
Women, Risk, and the Aftershocks of Iran’s Sexual Revolution
with
Anthropology Professor Pardis Mahdavi

Register Online

- What: A discussion with Professor Mahdavi

- When: Thursday, December 10, 2009
- Where: The Princeton Club of New York
15 W. 43rd Street, NY NY 10036

-Details  Since the Iranian revolution of 1979, women have experienced increasingly marginalized status in the Islamic Republic of Iran (IRI). Despite the fact that rates of HIV and sexually transmitted infection (STI) are rising in Iran, especially among heterosexual women, changing conceptions of risk among urban Iranian women are not well understood. Due to the IRI’s strict ban on premarital sex, the distribution of educational information related to the health risks of sexual activity is extremely low, while the few existing sexual education programs are reserved for
couples who are married or engaged. Qualitative research conducted from 2000 to 2007 reveals that while increasing numbers of young Iranian women engage in unprotected premarital sex, most have little information or concern about contracting HIV/STIs. Rather, many women are more afraid of the social risks of sexual activity (being seen or getting caught by the Islamic morality police or family members) than the health risks of diseases such as HIV.  Women’s conceptions of social risk, their vulnerability to HIV/STIs, and their access to testing and treatment centers
are explored through triangulated fi eldwork involving participant observations, in-depth interviews, and focus groups with women, health providers, and policy makers in the IRI.

The cost to attend this event is $10, which includes refreshments. Please make your reservation  byThursday, December 3, 2009. Space is limited and reservations are required. Reservations are confirmed when payment is received.

The Increasing Influence of the
Democratic Senatorial
Campaign Committee

with Greg Carter '10

Register Online

- What: A new speakers series featuring current Pomona students
- When: Sunday, February 7, 2010 ~ 2:30 - 4:30  p.m.
- Where: Courtyard by Marriot
Los Angeles Sherman Oaks
15433 Ventura Boulevard
Sherman Oaks, CA 91403

-Details Until recently, primary elections were considered an important part of electing United States Senators.  But in recent elections, it is the senatorial
campaign committees, based in Washington D.C. and run by sitting politicians, who are choosing candidates and limiting, and some might say
eliminating, the individual states’ ability to pick Senate candidates. Join Pomona senior Greg Carter ’10 for a fascinating look at the origins of
these changes and impacts on current politics.  From increasingly complex campaign finance laws that allow for larger donations to campaign committees to Supreme Court decisions that have allowed for larger expenditures beyond the reach of campaign finance regulators, it isn’t politics as usual anymore. Greg will specifically address how the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee has become a powerful force in deciding who runs, where money is spent during the course of an election cycle, and how the changes specifically lead to an increase in negative campaign ads.

The cost for this event is $10 per person and includes light refreshments. Space is limited and reservations are required.  Please rsvp by Wednesday, February 3, 2010.  Reservations are confirmed when payment is received.

Mathematical Modeling of
Dendritic Cell Immuno-Therapy
for Cancer

Chris DeBoever,
Harvey Mudd College ’10
and
Megan Hunter,
Pomona College ’10

Register Online

- What: A new speakers series featuring current students
- When: Saturday, February 13, 2010 ~ 2:30 - 4:30  p.m.
- Where: Tustin Branch Library
345 E. Main Street
Tustin, CA 92780

-Details There are many ideas for treatment of cancer and not enough time and money to implement them.  Mathematical models of cancer treatments and
cancer growth provide a good way to help determine if certain treatments will be viable. We created a model of tumor cell growth and dendritic cells. Dendritic cells are part of your body’s natural immune system and warn your body to start killing cancer. We specifically looked at Melanoma.  In addition, we simulated treatments of injecting extra dendritic cells (DCs) into the body to boost the natural immune response. In order to create our model we fit parameters to laboratory data and used least squares regression. There are two equilibria associated with our model and parameters. Parameter sensitivity analysis was performed; tumor growth rate and the steepness coefficient of tumor killing were the most sensitive
parameters. It was also discovered that spreading DCs over many injections causes the body to have a higher immune response.

Please join these two outstanding young scholars for an amazing look at medical research from a mathematical perspective!

The cost for this event is $10 per person and includes light refreshments. Space is limited and reservations are required.  RSVP by Wednesday, February 10, 2010.  Reservations are confirmed when payment is received.
