Join President David Oxtoby for a discussion and special tour of "First Seen: Portraits of the World's Peoples (1840-1880)" led by Kathleen Howe, the director of the Pomona College Museum of Art and the exhibit's co-curator.

Professor Yamashita in Washington, D.C. - October 16
History Professor Samuel Yamashita will discuss his new book, "Leaves From an Autumn of Emergencies." It's the first English translation of diaries of ordinary Japanese citizens during World War II, including those of kamikaze pilots, housewives and children.

Downtown LA Walking Tour - November 5

Barnes Poems Receive Praise in the New Yorker

The recently published "A Word Like Fire: Selected Poems," a collection authored by the late Dick Barnes '54, a former English Professor at Pomona College, received a glowing review in a recent issue of the New Yorker.


Fitchett named Outstanding Young American

Mercedes Fitchett '91 has been named one of the Top 10 Outstanding Young Americans for her work with the US Trade and Development Agency in supporting business development in Iraq for the past two years.

Lucy earns Guggenheim Fellowship
John Lucy '71, professor of psychology and comparative human development at the University of Chicago, received a 2005 Guggenheim Fellowship to study the impact of language differences on intellectual development.


 


"The Scholar" Chooses Pomona

Freshman Melissa Hanna in July won the top prize on ABC's reality TV show "The Scholar," in which she competed against nine other exceptional high school seniors for a full college scholarship.


Pomona Ranked Sixth by U.S. News
Pomona College earned another high ranking from U.S. News & World Report, placing sixth overall, second for selectivity and fourth in both the "great schools, great prices" and financial resources categories.

The latest issue of Pomona College Magazine will land in mailboxes in the next few weeks. The theme is "Windows on the Mind," with features about memory research, discovering your temperament and how Pomona students cope with stress.   



Interested in applying to graduate school? Many graduate degree programs have application deadlines in the fall. Orientation Adventure takes first-year students across the state for four days of fun, but the behind-the-scenes preparations require months of hard work. The trips range from backpacking to kayaking, and organizers must prepare for everything from wild pigs to lightning.
