Pomona Named to List of "New Ivies"
Pomona College is one of 25 "New Ivies" recognized in the 2007 Kaplan/Newsweek "How to Get into College Guide." The guide also features an article by Vice President and Dean of Admissions Bruce Poch on how to write a college essay.
                 



Art History in D.C. – September 30
Professor of Art History Frances Pohl will be in Washington, D.C. September 30 to lecture on "New Directions in American Art History" and discuss her book Framing America: A Social History of American Art.

Women's Soccer Alumnae Game – October 8
The Pomona-Pitzer women’s soccer team is hosting an alumnae game October 8, the same weekend the Sagehens take the pitch versus CMS. Join your former teammates in the game, or just come to watch.


Experience Music in Seattle – October 15
Join Professor of Art History George Gorse at the Experience Music Project in Seattle October 15 for his lecture on the museum as both a modern shrine to Jimi Hendrix and as an example of how we commemorate modern cultural heroes.

Southland Coffee Tasting – October 15
Learn about growing, importing and roasting coffee from a fifth-generation coffee grower at Jones Coffee Roasters in Pasadena October 15. A must for all you caffeine addicts out there.


Yamashita in Chicago – November 5

History Professor Samuel Yamashita will be in Chicago November 5 to read from and discuss his acclaimed book Leaves from an Autumn of Emergencies, in which World War II-era Japanese diaries are translated.

On Campus Events

Biologist wins prestigious Gairdner Award
Thomas Pollard '64, chair of molecular, cellular, and developmental biology at Yale University, was named winner of the prestigious 2006 Gairdner International Award for his research on cell mobility and human disease.

Young Alumnus Recognized for Eco-Friendly Computer
By making the EcoSystem, an energy-efficient desktop computer, Robert Kaufman '04 and his computer company Jinglehorse have been nominated for the 2007 Well-Tech Sustainability Award.

In her book The Anxiety of Obsolescence: The American Novel in the Age of Television, Associate Professor of English and Media Studies Kathleen Fitzpatrick disputes the notion the television has caused the demise of the novel.

Young Alumni Fellowship Opportunity
The Robert Bosch Foundation Fellowship Program provides young U.S. professionals an in-depth understanding of the political, economic and cultural environment of Germany and Europe. The Foundation's Website provides program details, eligibility requirements and an application.



A Call for Nominations
The Alumni Association is seeking nominations for the Alumni Distinguished Service Award and the Inspirational Young Alumni Award. Nominations are due by November 3, 2006, and more information is available online.
