INTERNAL DEADLINE:  NOON on FRIDAY OCTOBER 3, 2008

INFORMATION SESSION WITH THE CHURCHILL FOUNDATION EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR:  TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 23, 2008  NOON-1 IN FRANK BLUE ROOM.

If not on a meal plan, contact Brenda Reynolds in the Graduate Fellowships Office for lunch arrangements-- we want you to be there!

Purpose

The Winston Churchill Foundation awards about a dozen one-year fellowships to enable outstanding American students to study and do research in the sciences, mathematics, and engineering at the University of Cambridge, while residing and holding membership in Churchill College.  Pomona is one of a limited list of U.S. colleges and universities invited to nominate two candidates each year.

Programs Funded
Churchill Scholars enroll in one-year Master's degree, certificate, and diploma programs in relevant fields.  The Foundation's web lists the most likely programs, but candidates may select any suitable program offered at Cambridge.  The Scholarship covers all tuition and fees at the University, accommodation at Churchill College, a generous living allowance, and round-trip transportation. Scholars may also apply to the Churchill Foundation for research funds.

Eligibility
Candidates must be U.S. citizens between ages 19 and 26 who hold a bachelor's degree (and my not have attained a doctorate) at the time they take up the award.  Candidates must be nominated by Pomona College.

Selection Criteria
Selection is based on: exceptional academic achievement as indicated by GPA; scores on the GRE aptitude test (no subject test is required) or MCAT;  capacity for original, creative work as shown by awards, special recognition and letters of reference; outstanding personal qualities as demonstrated by leadership and civic engagement; potential to thrive as a member of the Churchill College and Cambridge University community, and to represent the College and the U.S. with distinction.

Application/Nomination Process

Rising seniors with very strong academic records in relevant fields are invited to apply. Faculty in applicable departments and programs are also invited to nominate students.  Students who want to be considered for nomination should speak with the relevant department chair or faculty mentor, and contact the Graduate Fellowships Office with any questions, at any time during their college careers.

Internal Application

The deadline for the internal application is noon Friday October 3, 2008 at the Graduate Fellowships Office.  The internal application requires (1) a completed first draft of the University of Cambridge application and (2) the Churchill Scholarship application, including letters of recommendation.  Both applications are available on the web. The Cambridge application is not interactive; print it out and print clearly by hand or cut & paste the old way onto the forms. You may write on the Churchill online application but if you do this, print out your draft and submit it hard copy.  Do not submit on the website.  .Note that this is a first draft, and that we will work with our nominees to revise their applications in time for the November 12 receipt deadline.   MCAT or GRE should be taken in time for  the Foundation to receive scores by the end of November.  Scores from the past two years are acceptable. Pomona sends materials in support of our nominees' applications for receipt at the Churchill Foundation by the deadline date.

Explore likely programs at Cambridge by starting with the University's Graduate Prospectus for general subject matter and degree information, and then go to departmental web pages for more detailed information. The Graduate Fellowships Office is available to help potential applicants find the right programs at Cambridge.

Potential applicants are encouraged to also explore the Gates Cambridge Scholarship, and the Downing Scholarship, and to discuss the potential for multiple applications with the Faculty Advisor for other British fellowships, or with the Graduate Fellowships Coordinator.
