INTERNAL DEADLINE: NOON on
MONDAY OCTOBER 5, 2009
The Churchill Foundation now
requires nominees to file their Cambridge University
applications by October 15. The Graduate Fellowships
Office will mail your application materials to Cambridge to
meet that deadline, whether or not you are selected as one
of our two Churchill nominees. Contact the GFO well in
advance for advice and information.
Register online for access to
the application and instructions, but do not submit your
application online until after the campus selection process.
Note that October 15 is also the
deadline for the Gates Cambridge Scholarship, for which potential
Churchill candidates may be strong applicants, and are
therefore advised to consider
applying for this fellowship as well.
Purpose |
| |
The Winston Churchill Foundation awards about a dozen
one-year fellowships to enable outstanding American students
to study and do research in the sciences, mathematics, and
engineering at the University of Cambridge, while residing
and holding membership in Churchill College. Pomona is
one of a limited list of U.S. colleges and universities
invited to nominate two candidates each year.
|
|
Programs Funded |
| |
Churchill Scholars enroll in one-year Master's degree, certificate, and diploma programs in relevant
fields. The Foundation's web lists the most likely
programs, but candidates may select any suitable program
offered at Cambridge.
The Scholarship covers all tuition and fees at the
University, accommodation at Churchill College, a
generous living allowance, and round-trip transportation.
Scholars may also apply to the Churchill Foundation for
research funds.
|
|
Eligibility |
| |
Candidates must be U.S. citizens between ages 19 and 26 who
hold a bachelor's degree, and my not have attained a
doctorate, at the time they take up the award.
|
|
Selection Criteria |
| |
Selection is based on: exceptional academic achievement as
indicated by GPA; scores on the GRE aptitude test (no
subject test is required) or MCAT; capacity for original, creative
work as shown by awards, special recognition and letters of
reference; outstanding personal qualities as demonstrated by
leadership and civic engagement; potential to thrive as a
member of the Churchill College and Cambridge University
community, and to represent the College and the U.S. with
distinction.
|
|
Application/Nomination Process |
| |
Rising seniors with very strong academic records in
eligible fields are invited to apply. Faculty are also invited to nominate
students for consideration. Students who want to be considered for nomination
should contact the Graduate Fellowships Office and also
discuss their interests with faculty
mentors or research supervisor who can give some guidance
about suitable graduate courses of study at Cambridge.
Exploration of this opportunity can begin at any time
during interested students' college careers.
Internal Application
The deadline for the internal application is noon Monday
October 5, 2009 at the Graduate Fellowships Office. The internal application requires
(1) a
completed first draft of the University of Cambridge
application and (2) the Churchill Scholarship application, including
letters of recommendation. Both applications are available on
the web including
applications instructions. The Cambridge application is not interactive; you
must print
it out and either print clearly by hand or cut & paste onto the forms. You may write on the Churchill online
application but do not submit it on the website. Print out your draft and
submit it hard copy. Note that this is a first
draft- don't worry about perfection! We will
work with our nominees to revise their applications in time
for the November 10 receipt deadline. MCAT
or GRE should be taken in time for the Foundation to
receive scores no later than January. Scores from the
past two years are acceptable.
Explore likely programs at Cambridge by following links
on the Churchill Scholarship site and also using the
University's
Graduate
Prospectus for general subject matter
and degree information, and then go to departmental web
pages for more detailed information. The Graduate
Fellowships Office can help potential applicants find the
right programs at Cambridge, and is happy to provide
critique on applications in advance of the campus deadline.
Potential applicants are encouraged to also explore the
Gates Cambridge
Scholarship, and the Downing
Scholarship
for study at Cambridge and to discuss the potential for multiple applications with
the Faculty Advisor
for other British fellowships, or with the Graduate
Fellowships Director.
