Jack Kent Cooke Graduate Scholarship

Contact Paula Goldsmid to indicate your intent to apply, and to receive advice and instructions for submitting your application for Pomona's internal selection process.  Suggestion:  Do not put a lot of time in your application until you have received these instructions.  Internal deadline will be around February 1, 2008.

Purpose
To enable students of exceptional promise, whose financial situation might prevent them from entering and completing graduate or professional education, to do so.  The scholarship may be used for study in any field, at any accredited university in the U.S. or abroad.

Programs Funded
The scholarship can be applied to tuition, room and board, books, and other fees for the duration of the graduate degree program, up to six years. The amount and duration of award varies by student, based on the cost of attendance and the length of the program as well as other scholarships or grants received. The maximum allowable per student is $50,000 per year. Most awards are for fewer than six years and for considerably less than $50,000 per year, i.e. they cover the gap between other awards plus family ability to contribute and the actual costs of attending the program.

Eligibility
Current seniors and alums who graduated no more than five years before May of the year in which they apply, with a GPA of 3.5 or above, and who are already accepted or have applied to their first-ever graduate program for entry in the fall, may apply for nomination by their undergraduate institution.  Each accredited college and university in the U.S. may nominate two candidates. There is no citizenship requirement, however international Scholars must be able to obtain the appropriate visa. There are no age limits. Current graduate students or those who have previously completed any graduate degree are not eligible.

Selection Criteria
Selection is based on academic ability, financial need, leadership potential and participation in or appreciation for the arts and humanities. The Foundation receives about 1,200 nominations each year and awards about 30 scholarships annually. Receipt of financial aid while an undergraduate is a minimal though not sufficient indicator of a realistic chance of consideration. The Foundation seeks to help new students whose families are not able to provide the financial "safety net" that would enable an applicant to enter graduate school with the confidence that resources could be made available in the event of unforeseen need.  NB:  All nominees, even if financially independent during or after college, must provide detailed financial information for both parents, including assets and federal income tax records (or the closest equivalent, for international students).

Application/Nomination Process
Pomona selects two seniors or recent graduates for nomination to the Foundation. Important:  Read thoroughly all information and forms on the Jack Kent Cooke Graduate Fellowship web before deciding whether to apply.  New in 2007: the national deadline is now March 15, therefore institutional deadlines will be considerably earlier.
