Purpose: The Freeman Foundation’s major objectives
include strengthening the bonds of friendship between the
U.S. and the countries of Asia, through developing a greater
mutual understanding and appreciation of cultures,
histories, and institutions.
Programs Funded: Semester, summer, and academic year in
East and/or Southeast Asian countries are funded. Recipients
are required to maintain a print, photo, or video journal
and submit reports on their project. Note
that this is an entirely different program from the Freeman
grants awarded internally within the Claremont Colleges for
research in Asia.
Eligibility: Students who are eligible for financial
aid and who are in good standing may apply. Applicants
should demonstrate interest in East and/or Southeast Asian
peoples, cultures, history, tradition, education, or economy
by virtue of coursework, participation in organizational
activities, study abroad, or travel. Priority is given
to applicants with no previous experience in the country to
which they are applying. Graduating seniors are not
eligible.
Selection Criteria: In addition to the quality of the
proposal and recommendations, the selection committee
considers demonstrated appropriate academic and other
preparation, .and benefit to the applicant's academic and
intellectual development.
Application/Nomination Process: Students apply for study
abroad programs simultaneous with application for the
Fellowship. Applications must be submitted to the
Foundation by Study Abroad advisors. Internal
deadlines will be earlier than the national deadlines.
