Purpose: The Fulbright program seeks to promote international understanding by offering awards for one year of study, research, or English language teaching abroad. Support is available for most countries and regions around the world. The number of grants in each country varies from year to year. Check the Fulbright site online, and work with the faculty advisors and the GFO spring/summer before senior year. You may apply for only one program (Full Grant or ETA) in one country.

Programs Funded:
Information on this page is for the U.S. Student Program for one-year study and research grants, and English Teaching Assistantships (ETAs).  Awards vary from country to country based on living costs, and normally cover transportation, tuition and books if relevant, and living expenses including health insurance. Language and orientation courses may be covered where appropriate.

Eligibility:
Graduating seniors, graduate students, and any U.S. citizen who has not yet earned a PhD may apply for the U.S. Student Program. There is no age limit.  Candidates must be in good health, and must demonstrate language proficiency sufficient to the needs of their projects.

Selection Criteria:
A good academic record, a suitable level of language preparation, a feasible project, and well-written essays are important. Most Pomona applicants propose research projects-- either independent or joining an ongoing project-- affiliated with a non-profit organization,  university, independent lab or museum, or a similar organization, rather than a year of formal enrollment at a university.  Unless you are applying to enroll in a university, for most countries your application should include a hard copy letter from a person with appropriate credentials, offering affiliation with an organization that is a suitable "home" for your project. A few countries arrange affiliations after selection. Check the details for all countries of interest to you.  Potential applicants are urged to consult the Fulbright faculty advisors or Graduate Fellowships Office early on.  English Teaching Assistantships require an almost identical application and have the same deadlines.  Teaching assistants can count on having free time to do a mini-project of their own. Most ETAs do not know where in their country they will be placed until after selection; therefore mini-projects should not require residence in any particular city or town.  All applicants should include plans for some involvement in the community, beyond their own projects.

Application Process:
Information is posted online in May for the academic year commencing 16 months later.  There is no limit on the number of applicants Pomona may put forward, but all seniors who apply must meet the on-campus deadline in early October and attend an interview. Alums are welcome to contact us for advice, and usually apply through their university if enrolled in graduate school, or as "at large" candidates if not in school.  U.S. selection committees review applications in late fall, and candidates recommended for further consideration are forwarded to supervising agencies abroad. In January applicants are notified of their status in the preliminary competition. Final selection decisions are made in country and notification occurs at various times in spring through summer.

Other Notes:
In recent years approximately 900 Fulbright scholarships have been awarded annually, in a pool of 4,000-5,000 applicants. Pomona students have been very successful in this competition.  In 2007 a record 24 Pomona seniors plus several alums were awarded research grants or English Teaching Assistantships through the Fulbright process.
