22, 4:30 in SCC 218. Come to one or the other; if off
campus this semester email after April 22 for further

advising process as for Rhodes/Marshall/Mitchell.
DRAFT APPLICATION DEADLINE
for SUMMER ADVISING: JUNE 16, 2008
|
| Purpose |
| |
The Gates Cambridge Scholars program, created by a
substantial gift from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation,
aims to create a network of outstanding scholars from around
the world who will become leaders in addressing global
problems related to health, social equity, technology, and
learning. During a typical year there are several
hundred Gates Cambridge Scholars pursuing degrees at the
University of Cambridge.
|
| Programs Funded |
| |
The Scholarships cover fees at Cambridge University, living
costs and other necessities, and a contribution toward
airfare. Recipients may study for a graduate degree in any
field. It is also possible, though much less
frequently done, to apply as an Affiliated Student to
complete a second Bachelor’s degree.
|
| Eligibility |
| |
Applicants from every country of the world other than the
United Kingdom, who will hold a Bachelor’s degree or its
equivalent by the time they take up residence at Cambridge,
are eligible to apply. In addition to the Scholarship
application, applicants file a separate application for admission to the University for a
specific course of study. Begin exploring possible
programs of study during the spring before the October
deadline, as the application process may include the need to
contact potential supervisors at Cambridge, depending on the
field of study and type of degree.
|
|
Selection Criteria |
| |
The program seeks applicants with demonstrated academic and
intellectual achievement, and who show promise of bringing “...new vision and commitment to improving the life
circumstances of citizens in their respective countries”.
|
| Application Process |
| |
Internal Application
The Gates-Cambridge scholarship does not require College
endorsement, however potential applicants benefit from using
the process required for Rhodes, Marshall, and Mitchell
applicants, and are urged to do so. It is helpful,
though not required, to observe the same deadline for
internal application: June 16, 2008.
You may
download the Internal Application
in Microsoft Word format
, complete it and email it to
Paula Goldsmid
and Malkiat Johal
or you may download the
internal application in adobe acrobat reader format
,
complete it and mail or fax it to the Graduate Fellowships
Office. Potential applicants are encouraged to look
into the
other British fellowships with similar deadlines and requirements,
and to discuss the potential for multiple applications with
the Faculty Advisor for British fellowships or the Graduate Fellowships
Coordinator.Applicants for this fellowship should also
consider applying for the Downing Scholarship,
which funds one year of graduate study for a Master's degree
or equivalent at Cambridge.
Gates Cambridge Application for Graduate
Study
The
University graduate application now includes a
Gates
Cambridge Scholarship application; both must arrive
in hard copy at Cambridge University by
October 15 to
be considered for the award. Ignore the (usually
later) deadlines posted by individual graduate programs!
A print copy of the Graduate Prospectus is available in the
Graduate Fellowships Office. When visiting the
Cambridge University web, be sure to read about the course
of study in both the Graduate Prospectus and the web pages
of the academic program of interest, the former for general
information and the latter for course details.
Second Bachelor's Degree Application
(uncommon, but possible)
Applicants for a second Bachelor’s degree must send a
University undergraduate application to one of
Cambridge’s 28 colleges by October 15.
Colleges will invite
accepted applicants to apply for a Gates Cambridge
Scholarship. A print copy of the
Undergraduate Prospectus is available in the Office of Study
Abroad.
Letters of Reference
Two different sorts of letters of reference are required:
two are graduate school recommendations for the University, and one is a more personal, all-around recommendation
for the Scholarship. Learn more about
