Purpose: The College of William and Mary established
the Pamela Harriman Foreign Service Fellowships to inspire
the best of a new generation to pursue careers in public
service, by providing an opportunity for experience in one
of three posts closely associated with Ambassador Harriman.
Programs Funded: Three Fellows spend a summer in
professional positions with the United States Department of
State in one of three fellowship posts associated with
chapters of the Ambassador’s life: The Embassy in London,
in the country of her birth; the Embassy in Paris, where she
served as Ambassador to France; and the Office of the
Secretary of State in Washington, D.C.
Eligibility: Applicants must be U.S. citizens who are
at the time of application either college juniors or
seniors. They must show evidence of intent to continue
education (post graduate plans) and receive and
institutional endorsement from their school/university
Selection Criteria: The program seeks applicants with
outstanding academic records and evidence of substantial
scholarly research and/or creative projects, leadership,
public service, and commitment to community. Candidates must
pass the appropriate security clearance within the
Department of State.
Application Process: The first step is to apply to
the U.S. State Department Summer Internship Program;
postmark deadline is usually November 1. After State
Department summer internship selection is completed, and
awardees are assigned to the three posts, the Harriman
Office invites applications for the Harriman award.
Finalists are interviewed in Washington, D.C. in
March-April. Three Harriman Fellows commence their eleven
weeks of service in either May or June.
