This fellowship was suspended in 2005, and
is not expected to be renewed.
Sponsor's Mission: Mellon Fellowships in Humanistic
Studies seek to help exceptionally promising students
prepare for careers in college-level teaching and
scholarship in humanistic studies. The program hopes thereby
to contribute to the continuity of teaching and research of
the highest order in America's colleges and universities.
Programs Funded: The Fellowship award includes
tuition and fees, plus a stipend of $15,000, for first-year
Ph.D. program studies at any accredited U.S. or Canadian
graduate school in one of the following fields: art history,
classics, comparative literature, cultural anthropology,
cultural studies including all area studies, English
literature, ethnic studies, ethnomusicology, foreign
language and literature, history, history and philosophy of
science or mathematics, music history and theory,
musicology, philosophy, political philosophy and theory,
religious studies, women’s studies.
Eligibility: College seniors and graduates who are
U.S. citizens or permanent residents are eligible to apply; however individuals currently
already enrolled in graduate programs are ineligible except
under limited circumstances (check the website) . Minority
candidates are particularly encouraged to apply.
Selection Criteria: The program seeks candidates who
show special potential to become first-class
teacher-scholars and scholar-teachers. While academic
achievement as demonstrated in GPA and GRE scores is
important, selection committees also focus on a candidate's
breadth of interest, liveliness of mind and spirit, and
ability to communicate. They look for a commitment to
teaching coupled with a broad vision of learning.
Application Process: Pomona does not nominate, but
there is an on-campus deadline in November to allow time for
preparation of recommendations and consultation with the
faculty advisor. Applications must be submitted nationally
by mid-December. The GRE must be taken by early December at
the latest. Regional interviews are conducted in
February-March.
