DRAFT APPLICATION DEADLINE for SUMMER ADVISING:  JUNE 16, 2008

Information meetings Spring 2008: Thursday April 17 noon in Frank Blue Room OR  Tuesday April 22, 4:30 in SCC 218.  Come to one or the other; if off campus this semester email after April 22 for further information.

Purpose
The Rhodes Scholarships are awarded to outstanding scholars who show promise of contributing significantly to the world around them, particularly in the performance of public service. Thirty-two are awarded in the U.S. each year. Citizens of British Commonwealth countries apply through their home countries, which often have earlier deadlines.

Programs Funded

The award supports two years (with a possibility of extension to a third year) full-time study toward a graduate degree at the University of Oxford, England. British curricula differ substantially from those in the U.S., and completing a second Bachelor’s degree is sometimes appropriate, though in recent years only a small minority of Rhodes Scholars follow this route. It is also possible to receive the award for a one-year course of study.  The scholarship covers tuition and fees plus a maintenance allowance and round-trip travel.

Eligibility
Citizens of former British colonies (the U.S., Canada, India, and Australia, among other countries) and of Germany who are at least 18 and not yet 24 years old by October 1st of the year of application, and who will hold a bachelor’s degree by the time they take up the scholarship, may apply.  Application deadlines vary widely, and in countries other than the U.S. may be much earlier than ours.

Selection Criteria
Proven intellectual and academic achievement of a high standard is the first quality demanded of applicants, but they are also required to show integrity of character, courage, selflessness, interest in and respect for their fellow beings, the ability to lead, and the energy to use their talents to the fullest. Athletic participation was for many years a requirement, but today this criterion is expressed as the physical vigor necessary to lead an active life of service and accomplishment.  Most Rhodes Scholars in recent years have had near-perfect undergraduate GPAs.

Application/Nomination Process

Prospective applicants should contact the Graduate Fellowships Office or the Faculty Advisor no later than the spring of their junior year, as drafts are due during the summer. Candidates submit a preliminary application to the Pomona  selection committee, which conducts screening interviews in September to determine which applicants Pomona will endorse (= nominate). The College is not limited in the number of applicants it may endorse. As of 2005 the former two-stage national selection process (state plus regional districts) changed to a one-stage process.  Endorsed applicants may apply from the region of their legal residence or their college. Selected candidates are invited to interview in mid-November. Final award of the Scholarship is contingent on admission to Oxford.  Some links to help you explore degree programs at Oxford are provided here.  Alumni/ae applicants should seek endorsement from Pomona or, if more than one year into a graduate program, from their graduate institution.  .

Internal Application
The deadline for the internal application is June 16, 2008.  You may download the Internal Application in Microsoft Word format , complete it and email it to Paula Goldsmid and Malkiat Johal or you may download the internal application in adobe acrobat reader format , complete it and mail or fax it to the Graduate Fellowships Office.  Potential applicants are encouraged to look into the other British fellowships with similar deadlines and requirements, and to discuss the potential for multiple applications with the Faculty Advisor for British fellowships or the Graduate Fellowships Coordinator.
