Internal
application deadline Tuesday November 13 at Graduate
Fellowships Office
Purpose: The Rockefeller Brothers Fund Fellowship
aims to increase the number of teachers from
underrepresented communities in American
public education, and to develop a leadership corps of
teachers which will serve over the long-term as an agent for
positive change in the schools.
Programs Funded: Fellows receive up to
$22,100 for master's degree programs, summer projects, and
assistance with loan repayment for graduate school after
starting their teaching careers.
Eligibility: Pomona College is one of only 25 U.S. institutions invited to
participate in this program. Candidates must be juniors from
underrepresented groups who plan to pursue a master’s
degree to prepare for public school teaching. Majors in any
field are eligible.
Selection Criteria: Fellows are selected on the basis
of qualities that indicate potential to become excellent
teachers. These include: general academic performance;
writing and oral communications skills; evidence of
commitment to public service through volunteer work,
preferably in activities serving young people.
Application/Nomination Process: Internal deadlines
are normally in late fall. Interested students should begin
their applications early, as they must secure a mentor for
their summer project in addition to writing the essays and
requesting the recommendations normally included in a
fellowship application. Pomona College may nominate up to
three candidates each year. Finalists go to the Foundation’s
headquarters in New York City for interviews (all expenses
paid); awards are announced in April.
