Language Tables

Oldenborg offers foreign-language conversation tables which are held each weekday during the lunch hour in Oldenborg Dining Hall. Daily tables are held in Chinese, French, German, Russian, Spanish, and Japanese. Other languages, such as Swedish, Farsi, Sign, Greek, Hebrew, Portuguese, Romanian, Bulgarian, Nepali, Italian, Tagalog, and Hungarian meet once or twice a week. Beginners are encouraged to attend as well, especially on Wednesdays, which are set aside specifically for beginners.

Special Dinners

During the year, each Language Section sponsors a Special Dinner featuring an international menu and an entertaining cultural presentation. Oldenborg residents are encouraged to help plan the dinner and to be a part of the cultural presentations. Invitations to these dinners are extended to all Oldenborg residents and to some faculty/staff members. In addition, Pomona students not living in Oldenborg may request an invitation to attend these dinners. Invitations are usually mailed two weeks before the date of the dinner.

International Film Series

Oldenborg houses the International Theatre in its basement. The International Theatre is the venue for the International Film Series, which presents foreign films free of charge to Claremont Colleges students, faculty, and staff with valid I.D. The International Film Series is supported by the Virginia Glass Memorial Library Fund. Films are shown at 7:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and suggestions are always welcome. Film listings and descriptions are posted in monthly fliers.

Satellite

In addition to foreign films, Oldenborg has a satellite dish which receives foreign language broadcasts from around the world. The satellite dish currently receives three main international channels (click for a program schedule for each channel): CNN International (Ch. 03), Scola 1 (Ch. 96), and the International Channel (Ch. 98). Satellite programs may be viewed in any of the language lounges, or in the main television lounge.

International Relations Colloquium

The student-faculty sponsored International Relations Colloquium (IRC), held in Oldenborg Dining Hall, offers several lunchtime speeches throughout the year on international issues. Past speakers have included ambassadors, State Department officials, and distinguished foreign visitors. Watch the campus bulletin boards and newspapers, and check Oldenborg's Department websit for IRC speakers and other special events.

Conversation Classes

Not only is Oldenborg a residence hall, it's also a learning center. Oldenborg offers cumulative-credit classes in conversational Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish. Classes are taught each semester and are offered on a beginning or advanced level. These classes are taught two times a week by the Language Residents, and provide a good opportunity to learn the conversational and idiomatic aspects of the language being learned, without the formality of the classroom setting.

Study Breaks

Each Language Section holds a study break once a week in their respective Language Lounge. These study breaks often feature traditional foods, music, and games, and are a good opportunity for students to practice their language skills and socialize, while learning about another culture.
