Applications for the Spring 2009 Prague program
are due Tuesday, September 23, 2008. Please submit your application to the OSA
by this date.
Prague
In recent years, the Czech Republic has taken the lead among Eastern European nations in the transition to democracy and a free-market economy. As the capital of the changing nation, Prague is a city of social and intellectual excitement. An abundance of Gothic and Baroque architecture lends a charming Old World atmosphere to this city on the River
Vltava.
The Pomona Program in Prague is affiliated with Collegium Hieronymi Pragensis (Jerome of Prague College), and is housed in newly renovated space in New Town. In addition to classroom instruction, the program includes visits to historical and cultural sites
in and outside of Prague.
Dates: Fall semester: late August to late December. Spring semester: early January to early May.
Fields of Study:
Czech language and literature, Czech film, economics, Slavic
Literature, European art & culture, Jewish studies, history, art history,
religious studies, gender studies, media studies, political science, psychology and sociology.
The opportunity for an independent study course may be available.
Students should consult the program flyer for the current semester's list of
courses.
Eligibility:
Preference will be given to candidates who have completed college coursework with European content. 9.0 GPA required.
Number of Students:
Approximately 8-10. Total group approximately 40.
Academic Program: As of Fall 07, the
academic program in Prague consists of five courses (0.8 Pomona course credits each). Pomona requires students to enroll in the
Czech Culture and Civilization core course, and the Czech Language course,
taught in two parts: the pre-semester Let's Talk Czech and the semester-length
Elementary Czech. Students then choose three electives, taught in English. Students who wish to take an Independent Study must submit a well-developed independent study proposal as part of the application. Pomona students may
not take the core course on a P/NC basis. They may take only one of the
semester-length courses on a P/NC basis. Before the P/NC request is submitted to the OSA
students must make an appointment to consult with the onsite director in Prague.
The faculty of distinguished Czech scholars is drawn from several of Prague’s major academic institutions, including the Czech Academy of Sciences and Charles University.
This program offers a limited number of unpaid, non-credit internship placements in various fields. Students should indicate interest at the time of application
by submitting a personal statement about the type of placement sought, and
include a resume. The Director will discuss placement on-site prior to the final screening for internships.
Living Arrangements:
Students live in the CHP dormitory, located near the CHP campus in the historic center of Prague. Breakfast is provided in the dormitory, and Pomona provides students with a meal allowance for lunch and dinner.
