London - Drama/Fordham University
The Fordham London Drama Program was established in the early 1970s in association with a small group of theater tutors from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. It offers students the opportunity to study and work with leading professional theater tutors from some of the best known and most prestigious British drama academies and schools. Through practical work, scene study, and performance workshops, students work on improving their interpretations of both classical and modern material. The program combines the intensity of British theater training with intellectually and personally enriching experiences, and provides access to many cultural opportunities in London. The curriculum is a set program without course choices or electives. Classes are held in central London at the Fordham London Center.

In addition to formal instruction, the program includes guest lectures, master classes, six to eight theater trips, and numerous field trips in and out of London.

Dates: Fall semester: early September to mid-December. Students with compelling academic reasons may apply for the Spring semester.

Fields of Study: Dramatic arts.

Eligibility: Theater majors; 8.4 GPA preferred. A videotape is required as part of the Fordham application.  Students must have strong practical experience in theater and acting. As the program requires considerable physical activity, applicants should be physically fit and in good general health, and should not have any restrictions on their physical activity.

Number of Students: Approximately 4. Total group approximately 25–30.

Academic Program: The required program consists of the following courses for a total of 4.0 Pomona course credits or 16 semester credits:
British Theatre Acting (6 semester credits); British Theatre Now and Then (3 semester credits); Movement and Stage Combat (4 semester credits); and Voice Training for Actors (3 semester credits).

Living Arrangements: Students choose between flats (apartments) with other Fordham students and homestays. Both options are located within reasonable commuting distance, and Fordham provides a London transportation pass for bus and underground travel. Fordham provides a meal allowance, and Pomona provides a supplement.

London - Neuroscience/University College London

University College London (UCL), founded in 1826, is the oldest and largest College of the University of London. It was the first university institution to be set up in England after Oxford and Cambridge, and the first to admit students regardless of class, religion, race, or sex. UCL currently has over 16,000 students and over 4,000 academic staff. The College consistently ranks among the top five institutions in the United Kingdom.

UCL is located in the heart of the Bloomsbury district in the center of London. Most attractions of London are within walking distance of the College: national art galleries, museums, theatres, cinemas, concert halls, opera houses, rock and jazz venues, the main shopping district in the West End, and an endless variety of cafes and restaurants.

The Pomona Program at UCL is run in cooperation with the school’s International Office and the on-site Pomona director from the neuroscience faculty. This study abroad option is available to qualified Pomona students, who wish to take advantage of the school’s top-ranked Neuroscience program offered jointly by five departments: Anatomy and Developmental Biology, Biology, Pharmacology, Physiology, and Psychology. Students are fully integrated into academic life at UCL and are expected to attend courses exactly as British students do. This means attendance at lectures, seminars, tutorials, and labs associated with each course, and sitting the end-of-the-year examinations during the Summer term.

Dates: Spring semester: early January to mid-June. Students will attend two UCL terms—Spring and Summer—with an extended break between terms.

Fields of Study: Neuroscience, with electives in the humanities or social sciences.

Eligibility:  10.0 GPA and junior standing required. The following Pomona courses are prerequisites: Neuroscience 47, Biology 40 and 41, and Chemistry 1a and 1b. Applicants must schedule an advising session with Prof. Lewis, the Neuroscience Coordinator.

Number of Students: Approximately 5 to 7 Pomona students. Total College enrollment is approximately 16,000.

Academic Program: Students take four UCL courses, and normally each course is worth 4.0 American semester credits or 1.0 Pomona course credit. A maximum of 4.0 Pomona course credits will be granted for the semester. Students identify a maximum of two UCL departments in which they wish to enroll; they are admitted directly by these departments. One department must be Anatomy and Developmental Biology. Other departments from which students may choose include: English Language and Literature, Philosophy, Anthropology, Archaeology, Economics, Geography, History, History of Art, or Science and Technology Studies. Typically students would enroll in two courses in each of the two departments identified in the application. One of the total of four courses must have significant European content.

Applicants should schedule an advising session with Professor Richard Lewis, the program faculty liaison, to assist in course selection.  In addition to the required course, ANATB008 Developmental Neurobiology, students should select another course in neuroscience.  Students will normally select two other courses at the time of application.  All courses will be finalized upon arrival in London in consultation with the on-site Pomona director and UCL’s departmental advisers (“Affiliate Tutors”). Pomona’s P/NC option is limited to one of the non-neuroscience courses.

One of the many attractions of studying neuroscience at University College London is being able to take advantage of the neuroscience research seminars that take place in London. Pomona requires participation at five research seminars. Students select any five seminars to attend and write a one-page double spaced response. The response will focus on what you found most interesting and why. Upon return to Pomona, students will submit the five responses to the Office of Study Abroad. Grades at UCL will not be posted until the responses are submitted.

Living Arrangements: Whenever possible, Pomona students are housed nearby in either UCL or University of London residence halls, and students may choose either catered or self-catered halls. In catered halls, breakfast and dinner are eaten in hall cafeterias and a lunch allowance is provided by Pomona. For students in self-catered residences, Pomona provides a full meal allowance.

Oxford
The Pomona College Oxford Program is hosted by University College, one of the 28 undergraduate colleges of the University of Oxford. University College, often referred to as “Univ,” was founded in 1249 and is one of the oldest Oxford colleges. Little now remains of the medieval building, and in general the surviving structure is of 17th century or later origin. University College is located on one of Oxford’s main thoroughfares, High Street. Visiting status at University College allows membership in its Junior Common Room, and provides access to student dining facilities and to some Oxford University facilities including the college sports facilities and university clubs and societies (excluding the Bodleian Library).

Dates:  Fall semester: mid-September to mid-December.

Fields of Study: Humanities, social sciences, sciences (no laboratories available).

Eligibility: Applicants should have a strong academic and extracurricular record, be capable of independent study, and be eager to engage fully in both academic and extracurricular activities in Oxford. Application includes individual tutorial proposals and a faculty panel interview. 10.0 GPA required.

Preference will be given to candidates who have completed college coursework with British content.

Number of Students: 12 maximum. Total college enrollment: 370.

Academic Program: The program consists of a core seminar, a group tutorial, and an individual tutorial supervised and evaluated by Oxford scholars. The core seminar on British Politics begins in mid-September and continues throughout the term (1.0 Pomona course credit). Students may not take the core course on a P/NC basis. Beginning in October, students also take a group tutorial with approximately three papers (1.0 Pomona course credit), and an individual tutorial with approximately eight papers (2.0 Pomona course credits).

Each student is assigned to one of four group tutorials composed of small groups of Pomona students. Topics for the Fall '08 program were: 1) Art History, 2) History of British Architecture, and 3) History of Medicine. Students submit proposals for their individual tutorials with the study abroad application. Sample tutorial proposals are on file in the OSA. (Lack of availability of library resources and teaching staff may result in some students not receiving their first choice, as proposed.) Science students may take an individual tutorial in most basic science courses. No laboratory facilities are available.

Living Arrangements: Students live in a University College room during the first three weeks. During the Michaelmas Term (October to mid-December) they live in Oxford homes that are selected and allocated by the director. A meal allowance is distributed by Pomona College. The Pomona Room contains a substantial library of publications relevant to the courses. Individual lockers are available in College.
