The Pomona College science faculty and facilities are among the best
in undergraduate education in the United States. Libraries, laboratories,
and computer facilities are comparable to those at major universities,
with the important distinction that Pomona's resources are wholly
devoted to undergraduate education.
Science study at Pomona provides sound preparation for the finest
graduate schools. In a recent study, Pomona ranked fifth among all
liberal arts colleges in the nation in the number of graduates who
went on to earn Ph.Ds in the sciences, on a per-capita basis. Pomona
science students are regularly awarded National Science Foundation,
Watson, Luce and other fellowships.
Students profit from close and frequent interaction with faculty
beginning with introductory lab courses. Mentor programs provide
exceptional opportunities for students to work individually with
their instructors.
The opportunity for collaborative summer research
with faculty gives students the experiences, unusual for undergraduates,
of doing original investigatory work in science or mathematics.
In addition, numerous summer internship programs allow Pomona science
students to take advantage of research opportunities on and off
campus. Regularly scheduled lectures by distinguished visiting scientists,
as well as Pomona's own notable professors, probe important areas
of research and complement the classroom experience.
The Seeley G. Mudd Science Library contains 90,000 volumes and supplements
the Honnold/Mudd Library collection. It contains a rare-book room,
microtext facilities, and computer terminals for an on-line catalog
system for database searching.
Each natural science department in-corporates computing in coursework
and research. Numerous terminals have access to the DEC Alphas,
and mini-computers are used for various projects, including the
analysis of data read directly from laboratory instruments.
