The Social Change Model of Leadership Development
The 4/7 Leadership Program at Pomona College is built on The Social Change Model of Leadership Development. The Social Change Model approaches leadership as a purposeful, collaborative, values-based process that results in positive social change. The model was build upon the following assumptions:
- Leadership is socially responsible--it impacts change on behalf of others.
- Leadership is collaborative.
- Leadership is a process, not a position or title.
- Leadership is inclusive and accessible to all people.
- Leadership is values-based.
- Community engagement and service is a powerful vehicle for leadership.
The Social Change Model is built around 3 inter-connected areas, that cover seven key components of leadership (the 7 "C's").
Area 1: Individual Leadership
Consciousness of Self
Area 2: Group Leadership
Conflict with Civility
Area 3: Values-Based Leadership
The 4/7 Leadership Program is designed to be completed over several years. Participants will earn three certificates to complete the program. Each certificate focuses on one of the three areas of The Social Change Model and can be completed over the course of one academic year. The requirements for each certificate are flexible, based on the student's interests and passions, and can build on what each student is already involved with on campus.

To enroll, students must attend a program orientation and information session. Several sessions are offered at the beginning of each semester.
