Beginning summer of 2009, Pomona College will embark on one of its most
ambitious construction projects in recent years. Located on North Campus,
construction will begin on two new residence hall buildings which will house 150
students when complete. The project under the architectural leadership of
a team from Ehrlich Architects located
in Culver City, CA and General Contractor
Hathaway Dinwiddie is
expected to break ground May of 2009. When completed, the two new
residence halls will combine living, learning and
sustainability.
The residence halls will consist of two buildings totaling approximately 70,000
square feet and will house 150 students in suites with a common area and four to
six single-occupancy rooms. The current Athearn field will be relocated
above an underground parking garage and constructed with natural turf field
above. Each building will house 75 residents. The first half will be
located east of Clark I and the second hall will face Lawry Court. Both
building will be 2 and 3 stories tall.
Other functions included in the program of the halls include study rooms,
lounges with kitchens, laundry and storage. Each floor will have a common
kitchen/lounge space for residents. Wide hallways will have "pockets" of
common areas as open spaces for student interaction. In addition there
will be a study lounge, 2 project rooms for collaborative work and presentations
as well as network printers. On Building A, there will be a rooftop
community garden and an educational photovoltaic space. A new Outdoor Education Center will be
relocated to Building B and provide meeting space and gear storage. There
will also be a bike storage area for student bicycles.
As part of Pomona's ongoing commitment to
sustainability, the project
is expected to be LEED Gold Certified.
