Science Lectures at Pomona College Include Nobel Laureate 

During the next few months, Pomona College, one of the nation’s premier liberal arts colleges, will present a series of special lectures focusing on the sciences and the environment. These presentations give the College the opportunity to bring cutting-edge researchers to share their work with the campus community and, in the case of the Faculty Lecture Series, bring together faculty members to address timely issues from a variety of perspectives and fields. Each of these lectures is open to members of the Claremont Colleges community as well as the public.

February 5: Geology Lecture

"Antarctica: Tales from the Earth’s Past, Clues to Its Future" is the subject of the Woodford-Eckis Lectureship sponsored by the Geology Department. The lecturer is Dr. Molly F. Miller, associate professor at Vanderbilt and an editor of both GSA Today and the Journal of Paleontology. The event begins at 8:15 p.m. and will be held at the Rose Hills Theater, Smith Campus Center, 170 East 6th Street, Claremont.

February 6: Geology Lecture

"Granite as Builder and Historian of the Crust" will be explained by Dr. Calvin F. Miller in the second Woodford-Eckis Lectureship sponsored by the Geology Department. The 11 a.m. lecture will be given in Seaver South, Room 214, 609 College Avenue, Claremont.

Dr. Miller, a professor of geology at Vanderbilt University, is the co-author of Geochemistry of Accessory Minerals and the author of 56 research articles in highly respected journals, one geologic map and 117 abstracts. His primary research focuses generally on crustal evolution with an emphasis on petrogenesis and the evolution of granitic magmas. He has served as associate editor of both the Geological Society of America Bulletin and the Journal of Geophysical Research. The National Foundation has supported his research with 12 grants over the years.

February 6: Lecture Series -- The Environment and the Politics of Everyday Life

John Jurewitz, Pomona College Lecturer in Economics and Director, Regulatory Policy, Southern California Edison, will give an overview of the "Anatomy of California’s Energy Crisis: Shortage of Power or Shortage of Leadership?" beginning at 12:10 p.m. in the Blue Room of Frank Dining Hall, 260 East Bonita Avenue, Claremont. The presentation is sponsored by the Pomona College Public Events Committee.

February 6: Sky Show

Pomona Professor Bryan Penprase will explain issues in high-energy astrophysics at 8 p.m. in the Millikan Planetarium, 610 North College Avenue, Claremont. Viewing through the Planetarium’s telescope will be available following the program, weather permitting. For more information, call 909-621-8724.

February 20: Faculty Lecture Series-- The Environment and the Politics of Everyday Life

Suzanne Thompson, Professor of Psychology at Pomona, will discuss "Grass Roots Environmental Activism: Lessons from Johnson's Pasture" beginning at 12:10 p.m. in the Blue Room of Frank Dining Hall, 260 East Bonita Avenue, Claremont. The presentation is sponsored by the Pomona College Public Events Committee.

February 27: Faculty Lecture Series-- The Environment and the Politics of Everyday Life

Jacqueline Stevens, Johnson Visiting Assistant Professor of Politics at Pomona, will give a presentation on "The Atomic Cafe's Radioactive Breadcrumbs: The Origins of the Human Genome Project" beginning at 12:10 p.m. in the Blue Room of Frank Dining Hall, 260 East Bonita Avenue, Claremont. The presentation is sponsored by the Pomona College Public Events Committee.

March 6: Faculty Lecture Series-- The Environment and the Politics of Everyday Life

Jonathan Wright, Assistant Professor of Biology, and Gene Fowler, Assistant Professor of Biology, will give "An Historical Perspective on Environmental Sustainability" beginning at 12:10 p.m. in the Blue Room of Frank Dining Hall, 260 East Bonita Avenue, Claremont. The presentation is sponsored by the Pomona College Public Events Committee.

March 20: Faculty Lecture Series-- The Environment and the Politics of Everyday Life

Kevin Platt, Associate Professor of Russian, will speak on "Environmentalism, Globalization, and Political Sensibility: Lessons from Soviet History" beginning at 12:10 p.m. in the Blue Room of Frank Dining Hall, 260 East Bonita Avenue, Claremont. The presentation is sponsored by the Pomona College Public Events Committee.

March 27: Faculty Lecture Series-- The Environment and the Politics of Everyday Life

Lecturer John Jurewitz, Professor Suzanne Thompson, Visiting Professor Jacqueline Stevens, Professor Jonathan Wright, Professor Gene Fowler and Professor Kevin Platt, will host a round table on "The Environment and the Politics of Daily Life" beginning at 12:10 p.m. in the Blue Room of Frank Dining Hall, 260 East Bonita Avenue, Claremont. The presentation is sponsored by the Pomona College Public Events Committee.

March 27: Robbins Lecture Series -- Chemistry

Pierre-Gilles de Gennes, Professor and Director, au Collége of France, will discuss "Bubbles, Foams and Other Fragile Objects" as part of the Robbins Lecture Series which is focusing on "Soft Matter in Science and Industry." The lecture begins at 8 p.m. and will be held in the Rose Hills Theater, Smith Campus Center, 170 East 6th Street, Claremont. The Robbins Lectureship is sponsored by the Pomona College Department of Chemistry.

A Nobel Prize winner in Physics (1991), Professor de Gennes has also received the Holweck Prize (from the Joint French and British Physical Society), the Ampère Prize from the (French Academy of Sciences), the Gold Medal from the French CNRS, the Matteuci Medal (Italian Academy), the Wolf Prize (Israel), the Lorentz Medal (Dutch Academy of Arts and Sciences), the Heyrowsky Medal (Prague), and polymer awards from both APS and ACS, among many others.

He is a member of the French Academy of Sciences, the Dutch Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, the Royal Society, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences (U.S.A.). As of January 1, 2000, he has produced 482 publications.

March 28: Robbins Lecture Series -- Chemistry

Pierre-Gilles de Gennes, Professor and Director, au Collége of France, will discuss "Wetting and Dewetting From Principles to the Hydroplaning of Cars" as part of the 2001 Fred J. Robbins Lectureship focusing on "Soft Matter in Science and Industry." The presentation begins at 4:30 p.m. and will be held in the Rose Hills Theater, Smith Campus Center, 170 East 6th Street, Claremont.

March 29: Robbins Lecture Series -- Chemistry

Pierre-Gilles de Gennes, Professor and Director, au Collége of France, will discuss "Soft Actuators and Artificial Muscles" as part of the Robbins Lectureship. The lecture begins at 4:30 p.m. and will be held in the Rose Hills Theater, Smith Campus Center, 170 East 6th Street, Claremont.

March 30: Robbins Lecture Series -- Chemistry

Pierre-Gilles de Gennes, Professor and Director, au Collége of France, will discuss "Opening and Closing of Pores in Vesicles" as part of the Robbins Lectureship. The presentation begins at 8 p.m. and will be held in the Rose Hills Theater, Smith Campus Center, 170 East 6th Street, Claremont.
