During the
next few months, Pomona College, one of the nations premier
liberal arts colleges, will present a series of special lectures
focusing on the sciences and the environment. These presentations
give the College the opportunity to bring cutting-edge researchers
to share their work with the campus community and, in the case of
the Faculty Lecture Series, bring together faculty members to address
timely issues from a variety of perspectives and fields. Each of
these lectures is open to members of the Claremont Colleges community
as well as the public.
February
5: Geology Lecture
"Antarctica:
Tales from the Earths Past, Clues to Its Future"
is the subject of the Woodford-Eckis Lectureship sponsored by the
Geology Department. The lecturer is Dr. Molly F. Miller, associate
professor at Vanderbilt and an editor of both GSA Today and
the Journal of Paleontology. The event begins at 8:15 p.m.
and will be held at the Rose Hills Theater, Smith Campus Center,
170 East 6th Street, Claremont.

6: Geology Lecture
"Granite
as Builder and Historian of the Crust"
will be explained by Dr. Calvin F. Miller in the second Woodford-Eckis
Lectureship sponsored by the Geology Department. The 11 a.m. lecture
will be given in Seaver South, Room 214, 609 College Avenue, Claremont.
Dr. Miller,
a professor of geology at Vanderbilt University, is the co-author
of Geochemistry of Accessory Minerals and the author of 56
research articles in highly respected journals, one geologic map
and 117 abstracts. His primary research focuses generally on crustal
evolution with an emphasis on petrogenesis and the evolution of
granitic magmas. He has served as associate editor of both the Geological
Society of America Bulletin and the Journal of Geophysical
Research. The National Foundation has supported his research
with 12 grants over the years.

6: Lecture Series -- The Environment and the Politics of Everyday
Life
John Jurewitz,
Pomona College Lecturer in Economics and Director, Regulatory Policy,
Southern California Edison, will give an overview of the "Anatomy
of Californias Energy Crisis: Shortage of Power or Shortage
of Leadership?" beginning at 12:10

Bryan Penprase will explain issues in high-energy astrophysics

A Nobel Prize
winner in Physics (1991), Professor de Gennes has also received
the Holweck Prize (from the Joint French and British Physical Society),
the Ampère Prize from the (French Academy of Sciences), the
Gold Medal from the French CNRS, the Matteuci Medal (Italian Academy),
the Wolf Prize (Israel), the Lorentz Medal (Dutch Academy of Arts
and Sciences), the Heyrowsky Medal (Prague), and polymer awards
from both APS and ACS, among many others.
He
is a member of the French Academy of Sciences, the Dutch Academy
of Arts and Sciences, the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, the Royal
Society, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National
Academy of Sciences (U.S.A.). As of January 1, 2000, he has produced
482 publications.
