Attend live theatre.
“According to the American Theatre Journal, there are more theatres in
the Los Angeles area than in New York so there is a lot to see,” says
Theatre Professor Betty Bernhard. She can recommend anything from the
traditional to the obscure, from multicultural to gay and lesbian
theatre.
“For more mainstream theatre, I believe the Mark Taper Forum and South
Coast Repertory Theatre and A Noise Within are the best,” she says. “We
take a lot of students to these places every year on field trips. For
more experimental theatre, I suggest Actor’s Gang, Evidence Room and
Odyssey.”
These small venues might occasionally catch your eye with names like
Tim Robbins and Lily Tomlin as part of the production. And as to insider
tips to the ever-changing theatre scene, Bernard recommends picking up a
free copy of L.A. Weekly. “Their top picks are always right on the
mark.” And of course, she adds, “Always ask for a student discount.”
