Don’t forget your own backyard: the Claremont
Village.
When visiting the Village, students are always surprised to discover
that: a) people exist in Claremont who aren’t between the ages of 18 and
23, and b) there are actually things to do here. Rhino Records is a hit
with students for its wide selection of pop and obscure music. The Folk
Music Store, run by the family of the famed musician Ben Harper, not
only sells guitars, ukuleles and banjos, but also holds folk music
concerts. Next door is Raku, a funky knickknack and gift store. If you
need a quick bite or a caffeine buzz, local favorites include Bert and
Rocky’s Ice Cream, Full of Life café and bakery and Some Crust bakery.
The Village doesn’t offer much night life, but both The Press and Viva
Madrid restaurants are open late. The Press attracts the over-21 crowd
as it turns into a bar after 9 p.m. This is a bustling place to hang
out, especially when the live music begins. Known for its great variety
of Spanish tapas (small plates), Viva Madrid provides an option for all
ages.
