First Person / Summer Plans

What Vacation?

Students these days are on the go year-round. Here five Sagehens share their unusual and challenging summer plans:

Derek Young ’09
“I had been planning a comparatively mundane summer and one day received an e-mail from Biology Professor Nina Karnovsky, asking if I would like to help with her research on little auks in the Arctic. I will be studying their nesting behavior and feeding habits and relating changes in this behavior to climate change. How could you pass up an opportunity to do research in the Arctic, even if it involves long, cold days covered in bird feces?”

Dante Benson '10
“I'm heading to Beijing to study Chinese, which will help towards my minor in Chinese. It’s a great opportunity because of everything that's going on over there. With the Olympics, it will be a truly international city, and it will be interesting to see how China handles the problem of pollution and how the presence of the Olympics will impact Beijing's decision-making in terms of regulation of cars and factories. “

Danielle Joseph '10
“After coming back from India in the first month, I will be WWOOFing around Colorado, possibly making it up to Oregon for 5 weeks. WWOOF stands for World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms: For $35 per year you stay at organic farms with free room and board in exchange for labor. I'm really looking forward to a completely new experience and am excited about traveling with only a vague sense of direction.”

Erica Nelson ’08
“Some friends and I are hiking the Pacific Crest Trail for two months. We’re starting near Yosemite, hiking about 15 miles a day, and will end up in Washington. Early on we’ll climb Mount Whitney. And there are bears in the High Sierras! I don’t want them to eat me, but I’m excited to see them. The trip is a perfect way to transition from Pomona to real life—you can reflect on college and think about your next step without distractions.”

Bill Slade ’09
“I’ll be doing a 10-week internship with ESPN in New York City—the offices are in Times Square. I've loved sports my entire life and when I was young I decided that it would be great to have a career that intertwined two of my strongest passions--sports and business … My job will be to research and better understand the sports fan in various markets in order to increase distribution of ESPN networks … I know we will be visiting ESPN's headquarters in Bristol, Connecticut so I expect to run into some ESPN TV personalities, and I’m hoping to get to meet athletes.”
