Books / Freshman Reading
Primary Sources

First-year students will have summer reading assignments coming at them from left and right. As the presidential campaign unfolds, half the Class of 2012 will be sent copies of Republican Sen. John McCain’s 2003 book Worth the Fighting For: The Education of an American Maverick and the Heroes who Inspired Him. The other half will be sent Democratic Sen. Barack Obama’s, Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance and/or Sen. Hillary Clinton’s Living History, depending on whether the Democratic race is settled before the late June mailing deadline. Small group discussions about politics and personal narrative will follow when students arrive on campus. Topical tomes assigned for summer reading in previous years include Fareed Zakaria’s The Future of Freedom and Tim Flannery’s The Weather Makers: How Man is Changing the Climate and What it Means for Life on Earth.
