By the Numbers / The Class of 2010
First-Year Facts and Figures
It is hard to quantify the diverse accomplishments of the 378 members of the Class of 2010, but Dean of Admissions Bruce Poch kicked the year off by noting a few interesting numbers:
5,439 applicants, the most in Pomona College history.

-- 1,426 AP test scores submitted—with 13 scores of 5 by one student.
-- 71 first-years involved in Model United Nations, Model Congress or debate.
-- 44 different languages spoken by admitted class.
-- 39 states and 11 foreign countries represented.
-- 16 with siblings who attend or attended Pomona.
-- 2 who became vegetarians after bad experiences with roast pig on a spit.
-- 1 junior world champion gymnast.
-- 1 science fiction novelist.
-- 1 who first visited campus while in the womb.

Ivy and Palm Trees
College Guides/ “The New Ivies”
The 2007 Kaplan/Newsweek college guide recognized Pomona—for traits that Sagehens already knew—as one of 25 “New Ivies,” joining the ranks of the traditional ivy-covered East Coast institutions. Harvey Mudd College also joined the list. But Pomona will always have at least one bragging right over its East Coast colleagues, who can’t claim both ivy and palm trees.

Campus Quotes
Activism / Ralph Nader
“To know and not to act is not to know.” Three-time presidential candidate Ralph Nader in a speech at Big Bridges in October 2006.
Humor / David Sedaris
“‘Buy it!’ This is my sister Amy’s advice in regard to everything from a taxidermy horse head to a camouflage thong. ‘Just get it!’ she says. ‘You’ll feel better!’” Humorist David Sedaris at Big Bridges in October 2006.

Shirts & Hens /“StudMuffin”
Pomona Fashion
Don’t ask us what it means, but among the many intriguing T-shirt slogans on the Pomona campus this fall, this one, worn by Adam Conner-Simons ’08, caught our eye.
