Listen to some jazz or rock at an L.A. club.
As the center of the music biz, L.A. offers a diverse club and concert
scene, with something for every taste. The amphitheatres draw big names
in colossal settings, but Joel Calahan ’04, outgoing music director of
KSPC, recommends a couple of smaller venues—the Knitting Factory and
Spaceland.
“Spaceland is the best,’’ says Calahan. “It’s very intimate and it gets
good concerts. They do a lot of local bands and good touring bands. It’s
the type of stuff we play on KSPC.’’ Spaceland shows are 21 and over,
but The Knitting Factory is for all ages. If you are of an alternative
rock bent, don’t miss the yearly Coachella Valley Music and Arts
Festival—a two-day outdoor event in the spring that touts about 80
bands. Headliners have included Radiohead, Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili
Peppers and The Cure.
Catalina, Spazio and the Jazz Bakery are top clubs for jazz, according
to KSPC Jazz Director Jonathan Singer ’06. His pick is Jazz Bakery,
which offers half-price seating for all students 21 and under.
“Of all of the clubs in the city, the Jazz Bakery draws the biggest
names, and with the student discount, it is the jazz club to go to
before graduating Pomona,” says Singer.
