Featured illustrator for this issue is Dugald Stermer, whose disturbing and powerful images appear on the cover and accompany the three lead features in this issue -- Icebergs of the Third Millennium, The Coming Extinction, and The Man Who Cried Plague. (The artist's self-portrait is at left.) His illustrations have appeared on the cover of Time and in such publications as The New Yorker, Discover, Esquire and Rolling Stone. Among his more unusual credits is designing the medals for the 1984 Olympic Games. A resident of San Francisco, he is chair of the Illustration Department of the California College of Arts & Crafts.
