Second Nature
Alumni Association President Catherine
Troyer Rose '85
For Pomona College Alumni Association President Catherine Troyer Rose
’85, staying committed to Pomona is second nature. “It’s kind of a
natural thing,” she says. “It seems like the right thing to do: to make
things work on campus, to make things work in the dorms, to take a
leadership role.”
This drive to help her community began during her years at Pomona, where
she served as a sponsor, dorm president, resident advisor, writer for
The Student Life, was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa and received the
Senior Service Award. After graduating magna cum laude, she received her
MBA from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. While
living on the East Coast for 10 years, she conducted prospective student
interviews for Pomona.
She also has deeper connection to Pomona. Her father, Gary Troyer, was a
respected professor and aquatics coach for 34 years until he retired in
2004.
Moving back to California eight years ago has allowed Rose to increase
her involvement. From setting up booths at college fairs to joining the
Alumni Association, Rose’s volunteer work has amplified her relationship
to the school. “It has been great and rewarding for me to stay connected
to something that was very important in making me who I am,” says Rose,
who did marketing and management for Fortune 100 companies for 14 years.
One of Rose’s main goals for her presidency is to foster her own level
of commitment in others. “We want to encourage a lifelong engagement
with the College for everyone who passes through here, primarily
students, but also the faculty and staff, so that there’s a real value
to that lifelong association,” she says.
Rose and the Alumni Association plan to foster this connection through
increasing visibility of the organization and ensuring that they are
maximizing the opportunities for students, faculty and staff to engage
with each other and with the College. “The path is very wide open to
being involved either at the committee level initially and then moving
up into the board when that person wants to and when the person’s skills
are needed at the board level,” says Rose.
