The Spoken Word
Student Life/ Campus Fundraiser

A student-organized concert —featuring acclaimed spoken word artist Saul Williams (right), reggae band Full Watts and a supporting crew of student bands—raised more than $5,500 for the International Rescue Committee in April. While the supporting talent held their own, Williams stole the show: a packed Sontag Greek Theatre hung on every explosive word for the duration of his set. Between poems he commented on the connective passion that performance can inspire—and the important traditions of gathering to hear poetry. “Socrates,” Williams said, “even went so far as to say that the written word dilutes meaning.”
