Leadership /
Michelle Cooke ’90
Pomona Connections
For new Pomona College Alumni Association President Michelle Cooke ’90,
Pomona is all about making connections.
As a student, Pomona’s career office helped Cooke land an internship at
the California Public Utilities Commission, where today she is an
administrative law judge. In her first case as a judge, Pomona Economics
Lecturer John Jurewitz—whom she had as a teacher—was one of her first
witnesses.
“It’s a small world,” she says. Or maybe Pomona is central to hers.
After all, she met her husband, Brian Richter ’91, at Pomona.
It’s no wonder that Cooke signed on as president of the Alumni
Association. She wants to show others the benefits of such relationships
and help facilitate connections between alumni, students and faculty.
“My hope is that when my year as president ends, we will have started
involving more alumni in the life of Pomona College, whether it is
through developing relationships with other alumni or students or
faculty, utilizing the career services offered to alumni, or offering
programs and events away from campus that make alumni feel closer to the
College,” says Cooke.
If others follow her lead, they’re sure to see results. Cooke references
the association’s mission in her message: “to enrich and perpetuate the
bonds between the College and those who have passed through her gates
for their mutual growth, support and benefit.”
Cooke lives in San Francisco with her husband and their two-year-old
daughter. She is active in Pomona College activities in the Bay Area and
serves as treasurer of C5 Children’s School and supports the Food from
the Bar campaign for the San Francisco Food Bank. |
