Fame and (almost) Fortune in Bulgaria
When Economics Professor Slavi Slavov returned to his homeland of
Bulgaria over the summer, he had an easier time than usual explaining
where he worked. “I just tell them I work at the place where the guy
from Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? is studying,” says Slavov.
 In June, Yavor Kostov, a member of Pomona’s new Class of 2009 made it to
the final question on the Bulgarian version of the TV quiz show, called
Become Rich. The episode was devoted to graduating high school seniors,
and the top prize was about $60,000. Kostov had banked a total of
$30,000 but risked it on the final question and went home with only
$1,700. Still, he’s a big name on the streets of Sofia. “I get
recognized in the street, whenever I ride in public transportation,” he
says. “I have given autographs on several occasions.” |
