Arts @ Pomona College

Artists find endless opportunities for expression at Pomona.

Each year, nearly 300 Pomona students participate in the College choir, symphony orchestra, band, glee club, and various chamber music and jazz ensembles.

The music department presents a varied calendar of events supplemented by performances by faculty and visiting artists. Private instrumental and vocal lessons, from beginning to advanced levels, are available from professional musicians. Thatcher Music Building and Bridges Hall of Music provide outstanding spaces for rehearsal and performances.

Pomona's Seaver Theatre complex is used for productions ranging from classics to contemporary plays and from Kabuki to musicals. As with all performance groups, students from virtually every concentration work together in performing, acting, lighting and designing theatrical pieces.

A regular schedule of student- and faculty-directed plays and one-acts is presented throughout the year, and each semester, students present senior projects in which they are involved as actor, director, designer, or playwright. All productions provide opportunities for students to work behind the scenes as well as on stage.

Dance students take a broad range of courses and perform in dance concerts that feature works choreographed by students as well as guest artists and faculty.

Students have organized an art gallery exclusively to display their photography, painting, sculpture, ceramics, electronic imaging, and mixed-media work. Each year, student artwork is shown in Pomona's Montgomery Art Gallery, and the annual Senior Art Show is a popular event that attracts a large crowd each spring.

Montgomery Gallery also hosts a number of exhibitions throughout the year designed to enhance the College's curriculum and to provide opportunities for varied aesthetic and educational experiences for the broader community.

In addition to the regular classes taught by Pomona's art faculty, art students from Claremont Graduate University offer a series of informal, non-credit art classes.
