The philosophy
faculty is known for demanding precision in critical thought
and expression from its students. Many departmental courses
use the traditions of philosophical thought to cast light on
current problems of human existence.
Stephen Erickson's specialties are contemporary European
philosophy and, in particular, the work of Heidegger and
Foucault. Most recently he has been exploring contemporary
literature as a reflection of the emerging human condition
in the 21st century. Jay Atlas, whose specialties include
philosophy of language, theoretical linguistics, philosophy
of mind and the history of 20th Century philosophy, is the
author of Philosophy Without Ambiguity. Fred Sontag
specializes in metaphysics, the philosophy of religion, and
existentialism; he has written numerous books in these and
related areas. Richard McKirahan teaches ancient philosophy.
His books include the widely used Philosophy Before
Socrates and a study of Aristotle's philosophy of
science, Principles and Proofs. Paul Hurley teaches
and publishes in the fields of ethics, political philosophy
and philosophy of law. His essays have appeared in journals
such as Ethics, Mind, and Philosophical Studies; he
is currently writing on a book on consequentialism. N. Ann
Davis is the McConnell Professor of Human Relations; her
recent work is in bioethics, biotechnology and environmental
philosophy. Peter Thielke’s specialty is modern philosophy,
with an emphasis on Kant. He has also recently written
articles on Hume and material constitution. Peter Kung, the
newest member of the philosophy faculty, works in philosophy
of mind and epistemology. He is current investigating the
role of imagination in thought experiments.
