Religious Studies at Pomona College

Religious Studies is a cooperative program offered jointly by Pomona, Claremont McKenna, Scripps, and Pitzer colleges. The program brings together in one major the nearly 50 courses taught by a dozen scholars specializing in the various historical religious traditions, geographical and cultural areas of the world, philosophical and critical approaches to the study of religion, and thematic and comparative studies of religious phenomena.

The department emphasizes interdisciplinary and multicultural approaches in its curriculum, as well as close student-faculty interactions in the classroom and in research activities.

Margaret Dornish specializes in Asian religions, especially Buddhist studies, and is an authority on Zen Buddhism. Jerry Irish's fields are philosophy of religion, theology, and ethics; he is particularly interested in the social and ethical issues facing our contemporary pluralistic society. William Whedbee specializes in biblical studies, literary criticism, and the hermeneutics of religious texts. Zayn Kassam specializes in Islamic studies with particular emphases on Islamic thought, gender issues, and the mystical tradition. She is also a specialist in East-West comparative philosophy.

In addition to preparing students for graduate study in religion, the broadly based and inclusive nature of the major affords students the intellectual training in the humanities and social sciences to enable them to enter a variety of fields and careers.
