Study Biology Abroad

The Pomona College Biology department encourages students to study abroad for one semester. Many program options are available, including five programs tailored specifically for biology-related majors listed below:

Australia, Melbourne – multiple subjects

Australia, Townsville – Marine and Tropical Biology

Costa Rica, Monteverde – Tropical Biology and Ecology

Ecuador, Quito –  Comparative Tropical Ecology and Conservation

England, London – Molecular Biology

England, Oxford – multiple subjects (biochemistry)

Ireland, Cork – multiple subjects

Mexico, Merida – multiple subjects

Scotland, Edinburgh – multiple subjects

South Africa, Cape Town – multiple subjects (CIEE)

Programs indicated as “multiple subjects” are programs where students can enroll directly at the host university. Admission to biology courses is not guaranteed and these are not strictly biology programs. However, biology courses are offered at the host university and are available to students who meet specific course pre-requisites.

Applications include:

  • a personal statement,
  • two essays addressing the culture and political climate of the country you intend to visit, and
  • three letters of recommendation from faculty.

Applications are submitted at the beginning of the semester prior to the start of the program (e.g., apply in September for a spring program). For more specific information, please consult the Office of Study Abroad.
