The mbira dzavadzimu

The Zimbabwean Mbira Ensemble at Pomona College (Music 042F) is directed by Dr. Tony Perman. The mbira, sometimes called mbira dzavadzimu, is a small hand-held instrument from Zimbabwe in which players use their thumbs and index finger to play complex polyrhythmic melodic passages on metal keys. Ensembles of these instruments, in conjunction with rattles, vocals, and dancing or commonly played during religious ceremonies in parts of Zimbabwe. Pomona’s ensemble plays and sings the classical mbira repertoire. The ensemble rehearses on Wednesday evening and performs throughout the year. Half-credit course P/NC.
