Science, Technology, and Society (STS), an interdisciplinary intercollegiate program, brings together a wide variety of courses focused on the roles of science and technology in an increasingly interdependent world. Students take courses in a scientific or engineering discipline of their choice, as well as core courses in the historical, philosophical, and sociopolitical aspects of science and technology. A senior thesis is required. Recent topics include the commercialization of the Internet, new approaches to science education, Eastern and Western approaches to medicine, and the political economy of recycling.
Alumni have followed a variety of pursuits for which STS provides an excellent foundation. These include: teaching, health care administration, graduate STS programs which lead to academic careers, professional schools (law, medicine, business, etc.), science journalism, software development, and political activism around technology-intensive issues (energy, health care, etc.).
