Sociology at Pomona combines rigorous training in social theory and research design with extensive attention to social problems in communities. In sociology courses, students learn how group membership affects human behavior and how the structure of society determines individual opportunity and achievement. A major in sociology prepares students for a variety of career options, ranging from market research and family therapy, to teaching and data analysis. Most graduates pursue professional training at the master's or doctoral level in health care, education, social services, law, business, organizational behavior, or sociology. The department's senior exercise allows students to work closely with one or two faculty members on a research project of their choice, which often result in a published article.
Robert Herman '51 (professor emeritus) leads tours in Los Angeles, the city of Pomona, and Claremont. The author of a book on downtown Los Angeles, Professor Herman is available to consult with students on urban issues.
Jill Grigsby recently co-wrote Society and Population and serves on the City of Claremont Committee on Aging. Her teaching and research interests include population, family, and aging.
Lynn Rapaport, the author of Jews in Germany after the Holocaust: Memory, Identity, and Jewish-German Relations, is continuing her work on the Holocaust, working in both Germany and the United States. She teaches courses in social theory, social stratification, emotions, and women's roles in society.
Gilda Ochoa holds a joint appointment in Sociology and Chicana/o Studies. Her research interests include Chicanas/os in contemporary society; race, ethnicity, class, and gender; communities and institutions; and immigration. Her current research focuses on the factors that influence the relationships between Mexican Americans and Mexican immigrants in La Puente, California.
