Anthropology at Pomona offers a holistic, comparative, fieldwork-based
approach to the understanding of human lifeways. Courses at Pitzer and
Scripps Colleges supplement the offerings at Pomona, providing a breadth
of curriculum usually found only at a large university.
Dru Gladney joined the College this year as president of Pacific Basin
Institute and professor of anthropology. He conducts research on ethnic
and cultural nationalism in Asia, focusing on issues of identity,
economy, nation-state formation, transnationalism and political
development.
Assistant Professor Pardis Mahdavi received her doctorate in
sociomedical sciences and anthropology from Columbia University. Her
research interests include sexuality, human rights, transnational
feminism and public health in the context of changing global and
political structures.
Ralph Bolton '61's maintains his research interests in gay cultures, gay
rights and HIV/AIDS prevention in Europe and the U.S. He is currently
focusing on changes in Andean cultures and rural development projects in
Puno, Peru.
Lynn Thomas' studies
have ranged from West Sumatran kinship to ideology in the U.S.; he gives
attention to language, cognitive anthropology, and the sociology of
knowledge.
Jennifer Perry, an archaeologist, examines coastal hunting and gathering
societies with a special emphasis on the Chumash people of the Santa
Barbara Channel. |
