Gender and
Women's Studies at Pomona College focuses on the intersections of gender with
other social forces such as race, sexuality, class and imperialism. Courses in
the program investigate the culturally and historically specific production of
these social differences at the local, national and transnational level. The
curriculum reflects the wide-ranging impact of feminist research both inside the
academy and in the larger society. It fosters rigorous critical inquiry,
challenging conventional cultural assumptions about women, sexuality, gender
roles, and other social categories and hierarchies. The major promotes the
development of new ideas and research in feminist scholarship in an open and
supportive environment and culminates in a senior thesis.
Gender and
Women's Studies offers a major that links feminist scholarship with other
departments and interdisciplinary programs, including Art History, Economics,
English, French, History, Politics, Psychology, Religious Studies, Science,
Technology and Society, Sociology and Theatre. This combination offers students
preparing for graduate school or a non-academic career the opportunity to
explore disciplinary and interdisciplinary constructions of knowledge in ways
richly informed by feminist scholarship.
Gender and
Women's Studies majors complete a core curriculum in one of these departments or
programs and in Gender and Women's Studies to major in, for example, English/Gender

Studies. Each student electing this major has a faculty advisor in the
department of the major who also teaches Gender and Women's Studies.
