Why Host an Intern?
Internship programs are an ideal way to build your brand with Pomona College students. At a small college, students find out about many opportunities through word-of-mouth. Having a student on campus that is telling his/her friends about their great experience working with your organization is a great way to build a pipeline of top talent. Additionally, internships give students hands-on work experience while allowing organizations to meet staffing needs.
Internships benefit not only the intern, but also the sponsoring organization by allowing the sponsor to:
benefit from creative, bright and highly motivated students.
Employer benefits include:
- Having projects completed that full-time staff are not able to fit in their already packed schedules
- Identifying high caliber candidates for future openings
- Hearing new and fresh perspectives
Internship Supervisors should:
Provide substantive projects and tasks that will develop professional skills (i.e. marketing, data analysis, etc.) beyond administrative tasks. Long-term, on-going project/tasks would be preferable as opposed to multiple short-term projects/tasks.
- Regularly supervise and at times, train interns when necessary.
- Provide at least 48 hour notice of schedule changes (so interns can make the necessary transportation arrangements)
- Involve interns in the life of the organization (i.e. attending staff meetings, special outreach events) based upon intern’s availability and interests.
- Provide insights about the industry through informal conversations and interactions (i.e. job searching strategies for the entertainment industry)
- Offer feedback on the intern’s performance
