Suzanne Chávez-Silverman has taken Spanglish code-switching (i.e. moving from one language to another in the same phrase or sentence) to a new literary level in her bilingual literary work, Killer Crónicas: Bilingual Memories (November 2004). The author's inventive and flamboyant use of Spanglish, and her adaptation of the confessional "crónica" make the memoir compelling, powerful and timely. One of the book's chronicles, "Anniversary Crónica," was awarded First Prize in Personal Memoir in the "Chicano Literary Excellence Contest" sponsored by the U.S. national literary magazine el Andar.

"With the book," says Chávez-Silverman, "I wanted to prove that literary language could be created switching back and forth between two languages. Something different happens between and among languages, and not just in the U.S."
