Professor Herbert Smith

Herbert Smith, emeritus professor of history, died on September 28, 2011, at the age of 93.

Herb Smith came to Pomona College in 1952, after earning BA and MA degrees at the University of Iowa and a PhD at the University of California, Berkeley. In addition to teaching history, he served as associate director of Admissions and director of Financial Aid during the 1960s, and it was on his watch that Pomona established a policy of need-blind admissions. Specializing in the history of Asia, particularly Thailand, Professor Smith returned to full-time teaching in 1969 and retired as the John Sutton Miner Professor of History in 1983. Upon his retirement, the College reported that he confessed to having had three serious loves in his life: his wife, Dorothy, formerly a psychologist at Monsour Counseling Center; Clio, the muse of history; and the goddess Pomona.

Professor Smith requested that no services be held.
