Oral History Project
SOC 114 CH01 LA Communities: Transformations, Inequality, and Activism Professor Gilda Ochoa
This semester-long oral history project focuses on the histories and contemporary experiences of individuals, families, and communities in the cities of Pomona and Claremont. Students are either part of Pomona College Professor Gilda Ochoa’s Los Angeles Communities: Transformations, Inequality, and Activism or Pomona High School teacher Claudia Ruela’s World History Honors class. Students in both classes interview community members and determine the specific focus of the project. The classes worked to continue to foster a reciprocal relationship between the colleges and the high school, as well as capture the histories of people whose experience may otherwise be lost forever. The oral histories will be archived at the Pomona Historical Society.
Theatre for Young Audiences is a collaboration between the Department of Theater & Dance, Fremont Academy for Engineering and Design, and The Draper Center for Community Partnerships. After a month of initial skill building, one session each week is spent at Fremont Academy working with 7th, 8th, and 9th grade students. College students develop theater literacy, mentorship and teaching skills, and are involved in every aspect of the middle school sessions and the final production at Pomona College in the Spring. They co-create curriculum, lead activities and small discussion groups, and support the creation and performance of the production. The Fremont students not only perform in the production, but are instrumental in the creation of the piece. The play is created with their writing, which highlights their lived experiences around the chosen theme.
