The Fulbright program seeks to promote international understanding by offering awards for one year of research very broadly defined, university study, or English language teaching abroad. Support is available for most countries and regions around the world. The number of grants in each country varies from year to year. Check the Fulbright site online which is updated in May each year, and work with the Fulbright faculty advisors spring/summer before senior year. You may apply for only one program (Full Grant or English Language Teaching Assistantship) in one country.
Information on this page is for the U.S. Student Program for one-year study and research grants, and English Teaching Assistantships (ETAs). Awards vary from country to country based on living costs and normally cover transportation and living expenses including health insurance. Language and orientation courses, and tuition and books if relevant, may also be covered.
Graduating seniors, graduate students, and any U.S. citizen who has not yet earned a PhD may apply for the U.S. Student Program. There is no age limit. Candidates must be in good health, and must demonstrate language proficiency sufficient to the needs of their projects.
A good academic record, a suitable level of language preparation, a feasible project, and well-written essays are important. Most Pomona applicants propose research projects-- either independent or joining an ongoing project-- affiliated with a non-profit organization, university, independent lab or museum, or a similar organization, rather than a year of formal enrollment at a university. Unless you are applying to enroll in a university, for most countries your application should include a letter (scanned or faxed on letterhead with signature is OK) from a person with appropriate credentials, offering affiliation with an organization that is a suitable "home" for your project. A few countries arrange affiliations after selection. Check the details for countries of interest to you. IIE regional program managers may be contacted with questions about specific country requirements.
Potential applicants are urged to consult the Fulbright faculty advisors early on. English Teaching Assistantships and Full Grants require the same application and have the same deadlines. Teaching assistants can count on having free time to do a mini-project of their own, but most ETAs do not know where in country they will be placed until after selection and therefore mini-projects should not require residence in any particular location. All applicants should include plans for some involvement in the local community, separate from their own projects.
Step 1: Pomona offers an active Fulbright advising program during the summer, which will be initiated by the preliminary application form. All applicants must submit a preliminary application over email by July 2nd, using the document below.
Step 2: After submitting your preliminary application, please register on the Fulbright website by starting an Embark Online Application.
Step 3: Decide where you would like to affiliate (Full Grants only) and whom you will ask to write your references as early as possible. Please send this page to your recommenders. Your recommenders will need to email me their letters by September 22 and upload them to Embark by October 7.
Step 4: Work with the Fulbright advisors to write and revise your Statement of Grant Purpose and Personal Statement. Stay tuned for workshops in September that will feature presentations, peer review, and time for writing and revising.
Step 5: By September 22, email the following components to Jennifer Locke (note that your letter writers will also need to email letters by that date):
- Your Statement of Grant Purpose in PDF form. Please name the file lastname_firstname_Purpose
- Your Personal Statement in PDF form. Please name the file lastname_firstname_Personal
- Your unofficial transcript, saved as lastname_firstname_Transcript. You may obtain a PDF of your transcript through the Pomona Portal.
- Your letter of affiliation, if you are applying for a Full Grant. These letters should be addressed to you and need to be on official letterhead and signed by the author.
Step 6: Sign up for an interview (instructions to follow). Be prepared to take suggestions from your interview and revise your application accordingly.
Step 7: Submit all of your materials through the Embark system by October 7, 2014. This will give advisors time to review your application and submit evaluation forms by the national deadline.
Pomona submits the applications of all seniors who meet the on-campus deadline and attend the on-campus interview. Alums are welcome to contact us for advice, and if not currently enrolled in graduate school may apply through Pomona if they can submit all materials by the campus deadline. There is no disadvantage in applying "At Large" which is the alternative for alums not enrolled in graduate school. U.S. selection committees review applications in late fall, and applicants are told in late January if they will be recommended for further consideration. Final selection decisions are made in country with notification to candidates at various times from early spring through summer.
