Packaging and Awards

What funds are available to meet my financial aid eligibility?

During 2011-2012, approximately $31.5 million of scholarship and grant aid will be available to Pomona's students.

How is my financial aid awarded? What is a financial aid package?

Since 2008 all financial aid awards made by Pomona College have been a combination of gift aid (scholarships and grants) and student employment. The College's Office of Financial Aid will prepare a financial aid package for each admitted student who demonstrates financial aid eligibility.

An individual award would include Pomona Scholarship along with any appropriate federal or state grants and a work stipend.

For example, a financial aid package for a first-year non-California resident whose eligibility is $34,000 might look like this:

Pomona Scholarship $31,700
Student Employment 2,300
Total Aid $34,000

A California resident with an eligibility is $34,000 might have a package that looks like this:

Pomona Scholarship $21,592
Cal Grant 9,708
Federal Pell Grant 400
Student Employment 2,300
Total Aid $34,000

How do I receive my financial aid?

All students have accounts set up at the College's Business Office. Each semester one-half of your financial aid award is credited to your account. Grants and scholarships are automatically credited each semester; if a student or parent borrows to cover a portion of the family share, the loan is credited as an expected amount until the College receives a signed promissory note or, in the case of the Federal Direct Stafford or Direct PLUS Loan Program, proceeds have been received by the College. Federal work-study wages and earnings from other work are not credited to student accounts. Students receive paychecks every two weeks for actual hours worked.

What happens if I receive an award from a source other than Pomona College?

Students must inform the Office of Financial Aid of any outside awards received so that the awards can be coordinated with the financial aid that is offered by the College. Pomona College recognizes both the honor and the extra effort implicit in these awards; therefore, an adjustment to student employment is made before any adjustment to Pomona scholarship is made.

Does Pomona College provide assistance for housing between semesters?

Financial assistance is generally not available to students who wish to remain on campus when school is not in session--for example, during winter break or over the summer.

Limited funding for exceptional circumstances may be available through the Dean of Students Office.
