Jack Kent Cooke Graduate Arts Award
Purpose
The Jack Kent Cooke Graduate Arts Award enables graduating seniors or recent alumni with "exceptional artistic or creative promise" and financial need to pursue up to 3 years of graduate study in the U.S. or abroad. In 2013, the Foundation plans to sponsor 15 awards of up to $50,000 annually.
Programs Funded
The scholarship can be applied to tuition, room and board, books, and other fees for the duration of the graduate degree program, up to three years. The amount and duration of award varies by student, based on the cost of attendance and the length of the program as well as other scholarships or grants received. The maximum allowable per student is $50,000 per year. Most awards are for considerably less than $50,000 -- i.e. they cover the gap between other awards plus family ability to contribute and the actual costs of attending the program.
Eligibility
Current seniors and alums who graduated no more than five years before May of the year in which they apply, with a GPA of 3.2 or above, and who have applied to their first-ever graduate program in the performing arts, visual arts, or creative writing for entry in the fall, may apply for nomination by their undergraduate institution. Each accredited college and university in the U.S. may nominate two candidates. There is no citizenship requirement, however international Scholars must be able to obtain the appropriate visa. There are no age limits. Current graduate students or those who have previously completed any graduate degree, even in a field very different from the one they propose to enter next, are not eligible.
Selection Criteria
Selection is based on "artistic or creative merit, academic achievement, financial need, will to succeed, and breadth of interests and activities." NB: All nominees, even if financially independent during or after college, must provide detailed financial information for both parents, including assets and federal income tax records (or the closest equivalent, for international students).
Application/Nomination Process
Pomona selects two seniors or recent graduates for nomination to the Foundation. Important: Read thoroughly on the Jack Kent Cooke Graduate Fellowship web, and use their financial need calculator, before deciding to apply. If you are interested in applying, please contact Jennifer Locke or Professor O'Malley as soon as possible. "Phase One" of this year's competition is due November 28, 2012; you will need to submit a portfolio, application, and preliminary financial information by that deadline in order to be considered for endorsement.
