Assistant Director - Community Based Research & Learning (Draper Center for Community Partnerships)

The Assistant Director for Community Based Research and Learning is a new position that will work closely with all constituents: faculty, staff, students and off campus community members to maintain current and develop new community based research and learning opportunities for the Draper Center.  Current courses/programs include Theater for Young Audiences – a course that works with a local middle school and Oral Histories – a sociology course that partners with a local high school.  The Assistant Director will be key to implementing a number of community-based courses and research projects and as such, will work closely with the Faculty Coordinator, community members and Pomona College faculty to develop and implement new opportunities.  The Assistant Director will serve as point person for all logistics related to implementing community based courses and research opportunities.  The Assistant Director will take a leadership role in the Draper Center’s assessment efforts by working with various constituents to assess Draper Center programs, projects and courses especially as they relate to student learning outcomes as articulated by the Division of Student Affairs. Responsibilities include development of quantitative and qualitative research tools, data management and analysis, limited involvement in grant writing and occasional support for fundraising from private donors and occasional report writing.

The mission of the Center for Community Partnerships is to foster mutually beneficial exchanges among community members, students, faculty, and staff in order to support educational outreach initiatives, community-based research and learning, and other community engagement activities.

On campus, the experiences, ideas, and new perspectives that emerge from college-community connections can expand the classroom; enhance critical thinking; encourage students to view themselves as change agents; develop student leadership; support the recruitment and retention of diverse students, faculty, and staff; establish mentoring networks among diverse individuals; and help students refine the values and skills that will support lifelong practices of social responsibility.   

Off campus, these activities support the College's responsibility and commitment to contribute to the surrounding communities in which we live and from which we receive intellectual, academic, and staffing resources.  The Draper Center reinforces existing ties and forge new ones between the College and other community organizations ensuring dynamic, mutually educational and constructive partnerships.  In doing so, the Center contributes to a wider trend to view all people as legitimate contributors to new knowledge that fosters social improvement.

The successful candidate will have a minimum three years of experience working with community engagement, service learning and/or social justice related programs; demonstrated knowledge of community based research and learning including theory, ethics, planning and execution of service learning/community-based courses, curricula and projects. A valid driver license with a clean DMV record and MAC, PC, MS OFFICE, Adobe, digital photography and social media familiarity required.  Bilingual Spanish preferred.  Masters Degree in a related field. PhD preferred.

Assistant Director, Sustainability & Energy Management

Pomona College is seeking a talented, energetic, dedicated, and well-organized professional to serve as the Assistant Director, Sustainability and Energy Management. The candidate must be detailed-oriented and comfortable working in a relaxed but busy environment. 

The successful candidate will provide leadership to the College’s sustainability programs and will develop, implement, and assess efforts for the integration of sustainability throughout campus operations and programs. He/She will develop, enhance, and maintain environmental stewardship within the campus community and among its constituencies as well as develop strategies for: energy and resource conservation and efficiency; building performance and retro-commissioning; cost forecasting; community engagement and outreach; and strategic planning for sustainability. This position supervises a Coordinator position and oversees the various programs of the Sustainability Integration Office. This position is an ex-officio member of the President’s Advisory Committee on Sustainability.

Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Studies or other related field of study required; Master’s Degree preferred; Five years of hands-on experience implementing environmental or sustainability programs is required.  Certified Energy Manager Certification (preferred) or the ability to obtain within 18 months. LEED level accreditation preferred or the ability to obtain within 18 months.

Associate Dean of Campus Life and Director of Residential Life (Repost)

The Associate Dean of Campus Life and Director of Residential Life is responsible for all programs and services which support the residential life of students.  She/he is responsible for the hiring, training and supervision of the Residence Hall Staff (RHS).  This staff includes three full-time Campus Life Coordinators, the Resident Advisors, the Residence Hall Programmers and all paid and volunteer members of the Sponsor Program (e.g. Head Sponsors and Sponsors).  She/he is responsible for supporting RHS in their efforts in building a sustainable community and in their policy enforcement role within the residence halls.  The Associate Dean is responsible for supporting RA’s residence hall programming.  She/he is responsible for a number of programs throughout the year including new students' orientation and Family Weekend.  She/he manages the Walker Coffeehouse and coordinates campus-wide alcohol, safety, and policy education.  The Associate Dean is a member of the on-call group.  She/he is expected to be available for scheduled office hours, evening residence hall staff meetings, and meetings with the on-call deans.   In addition, the Associate Dean will be responsible for following up with student-code policy violators and assessing sanctions.

Masters Degree preferred.  Applicant must be familiar with the mission and philosophy of selective liberal arts institutions.  Experience as an RA is desirable but not required. Background check required.

Post-Baccalaureate Fellow for Educational Outreach (The Draper Center for Community Partnerships)

The Draper Center for Community Partnerships fosters mutually beneficial exchanges among community members, students, faculty, and staff in order to support educational outreach initiatives, community-based research and learning, and other community engagement activities.  Working jointly with staff to coordinate and administer various programs, the Fellow will support ongoing Draper Center educational outreach programs including the Pomona College Academy for Youth Success (PAYS), Pomona Partners, Learning IN Collaboration, K-12 campus visitations and the opportunity to design and initiate one new program based on Fellow’s interests, expertise and programs needs.  The Fellow will collaborate with the Assistant Director to further develop the academic year programming for PAYS, recruit PAYS participants and recruit, hire, train, and advise students to work with the summer and academic year PAYS program.  The Fellow will supervise student coordinators and support data collection and record keeping for educational outreach programming.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated a commitment to community engagement initiatives, social justice work or other related activities. Some understanding of the theory and practice of community based programs and projects is required.  Familiarity with local community based organizations and networks including K-12 schools is also expected.

Digital Filmmaker (Visiting Fellow of Media Praxis)

The Department of Media Studies at Pomona College, a member of the Claremont Colleges, invites applications for a half-time, non-tenure track position as Digital Filmmaker. The Digital Filmmaker will collaborate in the inauguration of the Pomona Media Guild, a new instructional program supported by an external grant. The position begins January 3rd, 2012. The Media Guild brings theory and praxis together to provide a structured video production experience for undergraduates in a variety of disciplines across the College.  The Guild Filmmaker’s primary responsibilities lie in co-teaching a half-credit course each semester (Spring and Fall) in video production, effective documentary and creative strategies, as well as pre- and post-production. 

The Guild Filmmaker will teach digital camera and sound techniques and advanced, non-linear editing in Final Cut. Other responsibilities include acquiring and maintaining equipment dedicated to the course and regular, in-person instruction and support for individual student video projects.  In addition, the Guild Filmmaker will work closely with a College faculty member to support other functions of the Media Guild, including public and online presentations of work, and to promote film culture on the campus. Although some Guild students may pursue experimental and fictional work, the majority of students will be working in the documentary tradition.

An MFA or established filmography and demonstrated teaching experience are required. Director, Summer Recreation Program

The Summer Recreation Program (SummerRec) is a six week program of supervised activities open to Pomona College faculty and staff dependents in K-6.  The program is generally scheduled between mid June and mid August. The SummerRec Program Director is responsible for the planning, development and implementation of group activities for the participants.  The Director will develop and plan the program to include indoor and outdoor activity sessions on campus and at local points of interest; explore off-campus learning opportunities for participants and coordinate schedules and fees with the appropriate agency or vendor;  develop the rules and procedures governing the Program, prepare and/or updates all forms; recruit, screen, hire and supervise up to four SummeRec counselors who will serve as support staff;  assign duties, review completion of tasks, monitor attendance and sign off on timesheets for payroll purposes.  The Director will addresses SummeRec issues and concerns raised by counselors, participants and parents/guardians, respond to requests for information from faculty and staff, establish fee schedule and purchase  supplies and services in support of SummeRec.  This position reports to the Assistant Vice President of Human Resources.

Required:  BA/BS in secondary education or recreation management or equivalent combination of education and experience; 3 years of camp program or informal education experience; excellent interpersonal skills; a valid California driver license with a driving record acceptable to the College’s automobile liability insurer and the ability to successfully complete the Red Cross CPR and First Aid training certification are essential.

The Baker for the Dining Halls creates an assortment of desserts for all three meal periods by following recipes and/or product directions; measures ingredients using a variety of measuring devices and decorates cakes, cookies, pastries and other baked goods.  The Baker maintains cleanliness of the work area at all times, analyzes all food production costs, including actual and variance, pre/post weekly food costs, food cost per meal, and purchasing specifications.  The Baker will perform necessary baking for catering events and have the ability and willingness to work various hours.

Dining Lead

The Dining Lead ensures that the dining hall food areas are clean and well stocked, oversees the set up before and during each meal period (utensils, plates, food labels), monitors food lines and beverage machines, opens and closes the dining halls before and after each meal period, unlocks and locks the refrigerator, windows and doors and ensures the dining hall is ready for service daily. 

The Dining Lead assists in training and supervising floor employees, monitoring productivity to assure timely completion of work, responsibility for filling and dispersing pack out orders and handling cash and making deposits from cashiers.  The Dining Lead will fill in for staff to ensure coverage, conduct small department meetings when necessary, monitor and insure safe working conditions, report safety infractions and maintain logs for the Department of Health Services.

Pantry Worker - Dining Services (Repost)

The Pantry Worker will be responsible for the set up and breakdown of the salad bar and deli bar in the Dining Halls of Pomona College. This position works with a variety of kitchen equipment and must be able follow all procedures and protocols for safe handling of equipment and food processing. Primary responsibilities for this position includes: mixing ingredients, preparing a variety of salads, salad dressings, toppings and condiments. Other responsibilities will include measuring, preparing relishes, fruits, cheeses, dessert trays, and deli meats and maintaining the cleanliness and temperatures of these food areas to ensure freshness.  Other job related duties may be assigned.  Must take and successfully pass California Food Handler Certification within 30 days of hire and successfully recertify every 3 years.

Utility Worker - Dining Services (Repost)

The Utility Worker’s responsibilities are to receive incoming soiled dishes, trays, silverware, pots and pans; sort and wash using appropriate procedures as required by the dish machine; assure proper chemicals used at proper concentration; assure proper temperature of dish machine and water at least once per shift; sort clean dishes, trays, silverware, pots and pans; restock plates, glasses, silverware, pots, dishes, etc., before, during, and after the meal period; sweep and mop floors and spills; maintain cleanliness of work and service areas including floors, walls, trash cans, and worktables; collect and take out trash from service and kitchen areas.  The Utility Worker may be required to assist in the loading and unloading of trucks; help setup dining room or banquets; may be required to maintain cleanliness of restrooms.  Some requirements are to keep back dock and trash bins clean and keep all trash cans and wet floor signs clean.  This position may require the employee to assist the floor attendant.  The candidate must be able to lift 50 pounds.

On-Call Positions

On-Call Class B Driver (Smith Campus Center)
Salary: $15.00 per hour
Will drive College-owned 25-passenger shuttle on an as-needed basis. Reports to the Assistant Director of the Smith Campus Center & Student Programs. Duties include: driving 25-passenger shuttle bus; servicing shuttle bus occasionally (gasoline, wash, etc.); performing related duties as assigned. Must be at least 21 years old, have a valid Class B Driver License with a Passenger Endorsement and have a driving record acceptable to the college's automobile liability insurance carrier. Must be able to read and speak the English language sufficiently enough to:  Converse with the general public; understand highway  traffic signs and signals in the English Language; respond to official inquires and make entries on reports and records.   Experience driving 25-passenger vehicle and working with college students preferred.

The Associate Director will be responsible for all facets of sports information including, but not limited to: promoting and publicizing the combined athletic program of Pomona and Pitzer Colleges (including 21 varsity sports on campus and off campus), developing strategies to build campus spirit around athletic events, and updating and maintaining a dynamic and timely athletic website. This position keeps statistics and records for all teams and reports them regularly to governing bodies. This position will also contact coaches and players daily concerning story ideas and developments in athletics, coordinate and cultivate sports reporters covering athletic events and developments, pitch stories about teams, athletes and coaches, distribute scores to outside media, write the athletic content for College media, arrange for appropriate sports photography, video and publications, and oversee student sports information assistants. The Sports Information Director must be comfortable among the athletes and coaches in the Physical Education Department while also working closely with a team of communications professionals in the Communications Office.
