Faculty data are presented according to two reporting formats:  American Association of University Professors (AAUP) and the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS). The formats differ slightly in terms of how they count faculty, so totals may differ between the two. IPEDS is the primary format for peer comparisons and for data on race/ethnicity. New federal reporting guidelines for the collection and reporting of race/ethnicity were implemented in 2010, so longitudinal trends by race should be interpreted in the context of this discontinuity.
